SPECIAL SESSION: Roadmapping the future of smart sensing and context
+
The EU sensor/context communities meet to answer the next FP7 calls
----------------------------------------------------------------------

CALL FOR PAPERS

***** EuroSSC 2008 *****

***** 3rd IEEE European Conference on Smart Sensing and Context *****

October 29-31, 2008
Zürich, Switzerland

http://www.eurossc.org/

**********************************************************************

The 3rd IEEE European Conference on Smart Sensing and Context (EuroSSC)
will be held on October 29-31, 2008 in Zurich, Switzerland.

EuroSSC was held before in Enschede (NL) and Kendal (UK).
Building on the success of the last years, EuroSSC 2008 will include
a highly selective single-track program for technical papers,
accompanied by posters, demonstrations, invited speakers, and an
industrial panel.

A special session will enable the sensor and context communities to
define the future smart sensing and context. It will serve to prepare
answering the next EU FP7 calls and to foster new research projects.

The vision of ubiquitous computing is that of pervasive but transparent
technology. Smart, context-aware (wireless) sensor and actuator networks
(WS&AN) bring the vision of ubiquitous computing closer to reality.
Emerging smart surroundings, objects and clothing contain networked
sensing and feedback elements to infer user's needs and provide targeted
context-aware assistance. Networked smart sensors recognize context from
raw data and/or capitalize on context to optimize sensing. Higher-level
context is inferred online or within the network by combining and
abstracting information from smart sensors. Together with networked
actuators, context-aware sensing and feedback becomes possible.

This annual conference explores techniques, algorithms, architectures,
protocols, and user aspects underlying context-aware smart surroundings,
and cooperating intelligent objects, and their applications.
Topics discussed include smart sensing, context recognition, and context
processing. Of growing interest are methods and principles for context
abstraction and processing given a Quality of Context that reflects
context uncertainty and accuracy of smart sensors. Principles and
methods for context-aware feedback through actuator networks and
their applications are treated.

EuroSSC 2008 aims to bring together academic researchers and industry
experts with a variety of backgrounds to explore technology, human,
and user aspects:

* *Technology and system aspects*: concerning intelligent sensors,
sensor and actuator networks and information processing for a new
generation of networked devices and intelligent environments.
* *Human and user aspects*: exploring scenarios, applications and
interaction methods for context-aware and pro-active applications
made possible by the diffusion of ambient communication, cooperating
objects, and interaction technologies.

We welcome submission of original and unpublished *posters*, and
*demonstration papers* covering all areas related to smart surroundings,
context-awareness and networked embedded sensor and actuator systems.

The topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

* Distributed smart sensing and context recognition
o Smart sensing: sensors inferring context and context-aware sensing
o Context-aware surroundings and infrastructures
o Distributed objects and wearables inferring context
o Algorithms and architectures for scalable context recognition

[Mycolleagues] CfP SCENES - Workshop on Scenarios for Network Evaluation Studies

Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this Call for Papers
=================================================================

The First Workshop on
Scenarios for Network Evaluation Studies
(SCENES 2009)
http://www.scenes-workshop.org

Rome, Italy
March 6th, 2009

to be held in conjunction with
SIMUTools 2009.

CALL FOR PAPERS

For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models
and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless
networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and
signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide
more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and
then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit
papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various
wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace
measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are
also welcome.

The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and
activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at
increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in
this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related, theoretical, and
work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios.

The topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
* Classification of scenarios
* Challenges in trace acquisition
* Tools for mobility, traffic and propagation modelling
* Methods in localization and tracking to acquire accurate movement traces
* Movement trace measurement architectures
* Characterization of movement traces
* Mobility modelling
* Validation of mobility models
* Traffic measurement, traffic characterization, traffic modelling
* Combined mobility and traffic modelling
* Characterization of signal propagation
* Propagation modelling
* Impact of mobility on radio characterization
* Impact of scenario modelling on performance

Authors are invited to submit full papers and work-in-progress papers for
presentation at the workshop. Papers (no more than 8 camera-ready pages in ACM

As we progress from Generation X to Generation Z, we are also advancing towards
Generation C where "the community is connected through context-aware content". Wired
networks and applications have already responded well to the needs of Generation C.
Though wireless is already prevalent in the forms of WLAN, WPAN cellular etc, they are
still seen as the last mile enabler for these wired applications. As advances in
pervasive computing, wireless communication and sensor networks continue, real time
information availability, ubiquitous connectivity and convergence can enable new
applications that are context aware and provide valuable services to the community.

This workshop provides a forum for academia, industry, and government agencies to discuss
the challenges involved in the design, deployment and operational issues of Generation C
wireless networks. The workshop will identify and define new applications, fundamental
issues and potential solutions. Contributions of all types including case studies and
research, addressing the main focus or one of following non-exclusive list of topics
are equally welcome:

* Connectivity and convergence of heterogonous networks
(interoperability, handoff, QoS, policies, resource management, roaming, etc)
* Smart environments (buildings, roads, vehicles, etc)

[Mycolleagues] CFP: Green Communications Workshop at ICC 2009

************************** CALL FOR PAPERS **************************

First International Workshop on Green Communications
(GreenComm¹09)

Dresden, Germany, 18 June 2009

http://www.greencomm09.org

In conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on
Communications (IEEE ICC 2009), Dresden, Germany, 14-18 June 2009

*********************************************************************

Objectives:

The steadily rising energy cost and the need to reduce the global
CO2 emission to protect our environment are today's economical and
ecological drivers for the emerging consideration of energy
consumption in all fields of communications. Triggered by network
operators experiencing energy cost as a significant new factor of
their calculation, researchers have started to investigate approaches
for reducing power consumption and manufacturers have started
offering energy-efficient network components. Also standards bodies,
such as the IEEE, are already processing standards for energy-
efficient protocols. However, research and development in these areas
is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is
far from being explored.

The First International Workshop on Green Communications (GreenComm
'09) will bring together academic and industrial researchers for
discussing energy-efficient communications. It will close the gap
between the already established conferences and workshops covering
energy-efficiency for IT on one side and for wireless sensor networks
on the other side.

Topics of Interest:

We solicit contributions that report recent results, share
experiences, or address research challenges in energy-efficient
network protocols and devices and in energy management. Particularly,
we want to identify and address issues with a very high potential for
significant energy saving including access network infrastructure,
home networks, and terminals.

Security and privacy have been the major concern when people design
computer networks and systems. In recent years, there has been
significant increase in network and system attacks, such as frauds,
distributed denial of service, viruses, worms, spyware, and malware,
etc, causing huge economical and social damage. While the attack tools
have become more easy-to-use, sophisticated, and powerful, interest has
greatly increased in the field of building more effective, intelligent,
robust, autonomous and adaptive security systems. It is envisioned that
the large-scale adaptive security system will be essential to provide
comprehensive protection to networks and systems in the future. The aim
of such an adaptive security system is to provide authentication, access
control, availability, integrity, privacy, confidentiality,
dependability and sustainability to networks and systems, with
autonomous and adaptive capabilities. However, building such a system
faces significant challenges. We expect the adaptive security system to
be
* self-organizing and can deal with different attacks without central
control, and through contextual interactions with the peer nodes;
* adaptive and broad-spectrum to both known and unknown attacks with
high true positive detection rate and low false positive detection rate;

* able to counteract the distributed intelligent attack systems which
have the learning capability; and
* collaborative and optimized to intelligently safeguard the networks
and systems with low management and maintenance cost.
These challenges need to be addressed under joint efforts from different
areas such as network security, computer communications, AI, autonomic
computing, bio-inspired techniques for security, adaptive systems, and
others.

>>Topics
----------------------------------------------
This special issue on Adaptive Security Systems in ACM TAAS focuses on
autonomous and adaptive security system theories, technologies, and
real-life applications. Original papers are solicited for this special
issue. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

* Adaptive security architectures, algorithms, and protocols
* Autonomic learning mechanisms in security systems
* Intelligent attack systems and mechanisms
* Interactions between autonomic nodes of security systems
* Modeling of adaptive attack and defense mechanisms
* Theories in adaptive security systems

* Benchmark, analysis and evaluation of adaptive security systems
* Distributed autonomous access control and trust management
* Autonomous denial-of-service attacks and countermeasures
* Autonomous wireless security systems
* Autonomous secure mobile agents and middleware

evolving threats today and more intelligent and automatic threats in the
future, we urgently need new security systems, at all times and in
real-time, to protect the networks and systems, without causing
performance penalty to normal operations.
Multi-core processors represent a major evolution in computing hardware
technology. Multi-core provides an application with more processing
power from the hardware perspective. However, there are still
significant software design challenges that must be overcome before the
vision of real-time defense system can be realised. The difficulty is
not in building multi-core hardware, but in concurrently programming
security systems in a way that lets them benefit from the continued
growth in CPU performance. Building such a multi-core supported security
system faces significant challenges. These challenges need to be
addressed under joint efforts from different areas such as concurrent

CALL FOR PAPERS

### Brief description
The owned spectrum allocation model in use today is believed to be obsolete. Firstly due to its intrinsic principle of fixed resource allocation that leads to a supposed spectrum scarcity, later revealed to be a question of non-efficient utilization. Secondly comes into play the need of introducing new wireless applications and services, which have experienced a huge growth in the last couple of decades, and are now supposed to cope with a multitude of already deployed standards. Both scenarios motivate the use of dynamic spectrum access in order to turn primary licensed networks into dynamic spectrum access networks (DSANs). This lends itself to cognitive radio, an enabling technology that will benefit several types of players and help to implement a more efficient approach regarding spectrum requirements in the future.

The aim of this conference is to bring together the state of the art research contributions that address the various aspects of cognitive wireless systems and technologies, including a broad range of communications, networking and implementation issues.

* Location based services
* Security, privacy, and performance trade-offs
* Community based networks
* Next generation networking applications (social, vehicular, healthcare, etc)
* Context-aware networks, service management and adaptive protocols
* Cognitive networks, protocols, and services
* Mobility models and traffic patterns
* Cross-layer designs and optimizations
* Testbeds, benchmarks, prototypes and experimental studies

The International Workshop on Computer-Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD) provides a forum for discussion of recent developments on analytical and simulation tools and techniques for the performance evaluation of communications systems. It was launched in 1986, being held every 2 years until 2006, often in cooperation with flagship IEEE Communication Society conferences (Int. Conference on Communications - ICC, Global Telecommunication Conference - GLOBECOM). Since 2006, the workshop has been held once every year motivated by the ever increasing interest in this hot research and development field with last venues organized in Trento (CAMAD’06) as a stand-alone event, in conjunction with IEEE PIMRC 2007 in Athens, Greece (CAMAD’07) and co-located with the ICC 2008 in Beijing, China.

IEEE CAMAD 2009 will be held in Pisa, one week before ICC 2009 in Dresden, Germany. The workshop is soliciting papers describing original work, unpublished and not currently submitted for publication elsewhere, on topics, including but not limited to, the following:

•          Modeling and Simulation techniques for Integrated Communication Systems

•          Traffic Engineering and Analysis

•          Traffic Modeling

•          Network Measurements

•          Simulation techniques for large-scale Networks

[Mycolleagues] CFP: The 3rd International Symposium on Security and Multimodality in Pervasive Environments (SMPE-09)

SMPE-09 CFP: Submission extended - Oct. 5, 2008
============================================================
The 3rd International Symposium on
Security and Multimodality in Pervasive Environments (SMPE-09)

http://www.sersc.org/SMPE2009

University of Bradford, Bradford, UK, May 26-29, 2009.

In conjunction with AINA-09
============================================================

Pervasive computing environments (PE) present specific peculiarities with
respect to aspects like security and multimodality. As a matter of fact,
the accessibility level of a virtual environment can definitively be
improved by natural interfaces and multimodal interaction systems, which
offer users the freedom to select from multiple modes of interaction with
services and permit to break down barriers about human-computer
interaction making communication intuitive and spontaneous. On the other
hand, while enlarging and easing the ways to access to the environment,
security threads arise and the environment must be properly equipped in
order to protect itself from malicious attacks and/or from wrong actions
performed by inexpert users.

SMPE-09 will be held in conjunction with AINA-09, in University of
Bradford, Bradford, UK, May 26-29, 2009.

SMPE-09 is the next event in a series of highly successful International
Symposium on Security and Multimodality in Pervasive Environments (SMPE),
previously held as SMPE-08 (Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, July 2008),
SMPE-07 (Nice, France, September 2007).

[Mycolleagues] ISORC 2008 Call for Papers

We apologize for multiple receipts of this Call.

---------------------------------------------

Call for Papers

ISORC 2009 - Tokyo, JAPAN
The 12th IEEE International Symposium on Object/component/service-
oriented Real-time distributed computing

Call for Papers

Important Dates:
Paper Submissions:              10  October 2008
Acceptance Notification:        25  November 2008
Camera-Ready Papers:            25  December 2008
Conference Dates:               17-20 March 2009

SCOPE

This is the twelfth IEEE Computer Society symposium dealing with the rapidly expanding field of object/component/service-oriented real-time distributed computing (ORC) technology. The principal theme of ISORC is the use of the object-oriented computing paradigm - which has prevailed in many non-real-time applications in the past decade - in a wide variety of real- time applications. In the ISORC series, this paradigm emphasizes its spirit of openness where diverse views and new approaches to challenging issues can be freely discussed.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Papers pertaining to all aspects of ORC are sought, including but not limited to the following:

Programming and system engineering: ORC paradigms, object/component models,
languages, RT Corba, Embedded .NET, RT RMI, RT Java, UML, model-driven development of high integrity applications, specification, design, verification, validation, testing, maintenance, system of systems, etc.

Distributed computing and communication infrastructures: Internet QoS (quality of service), real-time communication, networked computing platforms, protocols, peer-to-peer computing, sensor networks, inter-operability, security, trusted and dependable systems, fault tolerance, virtual subnets for ORC.

System software: real-time kernels and operating systems, middleware support for ORC, QoS management, extensibility, synchronization, resource allocation, scheduling, fault tolerance, security.

Applications: embedded systems (automotive, avionics, consumer electronics, building systems, sensors, etc), multimedia processing, RT Web-based applications and use of XML, real-time object-oriented simulations.

System evaluation: output accuracy, timeliness, worst-case execution time, dependability, end-to-end QoS, overhead, fault detection and recovery time.

Papers dealing with other issues that are related to the specification, design, implementation, and evaluation of ORC systems are also welcome. To promote dialogues between researchers and users of ORC, contributions from industry are particularly welcome.

CONFERENCE SESSION FORMATS

Following the tradition of ISORC, the conference program will consist of sessions of different formats:

* presentations of regular and short papers,
* panel discussions, and
* special sessions devoted to reporting industrial advances

GUIDELINES FOR MANUSCRIPTS

Research Papers. Papers should describe original work and be 8 pages or less in length using the IEEE paper format.

Papers presenting Industrial Advances. Industrial papers and practitioner reports, describing experiences of using ORC technology in application or tool development projects, are an integral part of the technical program of ISORC. A majority of these papers are expected to be shorter and less formal than research papers. They should clearly identify, and discuss in detail, the issues that represent notable industrial advances. Reports with project metrics supporting their claims are particularly sought, as well as those that show both benefits and drawbacks of the approaches used in the given project.

Short Synopses. Short papers (5 pages or less using the IEEE format) on substantial real-time applications are also invited, and should contain enough information for the program committee to understand the scope of the project and evaluate the novelty of the problem or approach.

According to program committee guidelines, papers presenting practical techniques, ideas, or evaluations will be favored. Papers reporting experimentation results and industrial experiences are particularly welcome. Originality will not be interpreted too narrowly.

Papers that are based on severely unrealistic assumptions will not be accepted however mathematically or logically sophisticated the discussion may be.

All accepted submissions will appear in the proceedings published by IEEE.
A person will not be allowed to present more than 2 papers at the symposium.

PAPER SUBMISSION

Papers should be formatted using the IEEE
Computer
Society format.  Authors should indicate whether the submitted paper is  a research paper or in the category of industrial advances.  Please submit your paper in portable postscript or pdf format (all uncommon fonts embedded).
