[Mycolleagues] Call for workshop proposals

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS
33rd Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference
(COMPSAC 2009)
Seattle, Washington, USA
20 - 24 July, 2009
Co-located with SAINT 2009 (http://infonet.cse.kyutech.ac.jp/conf/saint09/)

The IEEE International Conference on Computer, Software and Applications
(COMPSAC), first held in Chicago in 1997, is one of the major international
forums for academia, industry, and government
to discuss research results, advances and future trends in computer and
software technologies and
applications. The technical program includes keynote addresses, research
papers, industrial case studies, panel discussions and fast abstracts. It
also includes a number of workshops on emerging important topics.

COMPSAC is designated as the IEEE Computer Society Signature International
Conference on
Computer, Software and Applications. Based on this designation, COMPSAC
organizers are able to work with other key functions of IEEE to create more
value for conference volunteers and participants.

Proposals for workshops are being solicited for consideration for
affiliation with COMPSAC 2009. Affiliated workshops will be held in
conjunction with COMPSAC and co-located with other affiliated workshops.
The purpose of these workshops is to provide a platform for presenting novel
ideas in a
less formal and possibly more focused way than the conference itself. As
such, they also offer a good opportunity for young researchers to present
their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community.
Workshop organizers are responsible for establishing a program committee,
collecting
and evaluating submissions, notifying authors of acceptance or rejection in
due time, ensuring a transparent and fair selection process, organizing
selected papers into sessions, and assigning session chairs.

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit a one-page workshop
proposal to the 33rd COMPSAC Workshop Chair, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed
(iq@mscs.mu.edu) by November 15, 2008. Submissions should be sent
electronically
by email with "COMPSAC Preliminary Workshop Proposal" in the subject header.
Submissions must follow the Workshop Proposal Format outlined below.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by December 15, 2008. Following
acceptance, workshop organizers will be expected to work closely with the
COMPSAC Workshop Chair to finalize details. Important due dates are
mentioned below.

Selection criteria for new workshops to be included in COMPSAC 09 will be
based upon several factors, including the scientific/technical interest of
the topics to conference participants, the quality of the proposal,
balance and distinctness of workshop topics, and the capacity of the
conference workshop
program. Special consideration will be given to proposals that address the
technical theme of COMPSAC 2009, Harmonizing Humans, Computers, and Software
in Services Environments.

Workshops use the same paper submission system COMPSAC 2009. Each paper
selected for inclusion in the proceedings must be registered for COMPSAC at
the full registration rate. Without confirmed
registration an accepted paper will be removed. Each paper must be presented
in person by the author, or one of the authors. Proceedings of the COMPSAC
Workshops will be provided as a separate volume by IEEE Computer
Society Press, and will be made available to all conference registrants on
site. It is the
policy of COMPSAC not to mail proceedings to the "no show" authors. All
workshop papers will also be electronically available through IEEE Xplore
Digital Database, and professionally indexed through INSPEC and EI Index
(Elsevier's Engineering Information Index). For further information on
preparing a workshop proposal, please contact Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, the
COMPSAC Workshop Chair, at iq@mscs.mu.edu. Also consult the 33rd COMPSAC
website at http://www.compsac.org as a source of first-hand information.

33rd COMPSAC Preliminary Workshop Proposal Format follows. Each proposal is
limited to one page, typed double space in 11 pt Times New Roman. Include
workshop title, primary organizers with their affiliations and
contact information, the significance of the workshop either to the
conference theme or to the general advancement of research in computer and
software technologies and applications, a statement of goals for the
workshop, workshop theme for 2009, likely participants, proposed duration
(i.e. number of sessions envisioned; 1 session=90 minutes for typically 3
presentations; typically 3-4 sessions to fill a day), plans for publicity,
and a draft call-for-papers. Please check http://www.compsac.org for
examples of past workshops.

[Mycolleagues] Call for Papers - Special Issue on Model Order Selection in Signal Processing Systems

Call for Papers
IEEE Signal Processing Society
IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing

Special Issue on Model Order Selection in Signal Processing Systems

Model determination is a fundamental problem in a wide variety of signal processing applications, such as model-order determination for linear predictive coding of speech signal, model-order selection for image segmentation and diversity-order selection for linear equalization in telecommunications. Generally speaking, the criterion for selecting a proper model order is to discover an appropriate tradeoff between the model-fitness and the implementation complexity associated with hardware or software for digital signal processing platforms. Crucial tradeoffs between the system performance and the methodological complexity appear to draw a lot of recent research attention. In this call for papers, we would like to invite novel ideas, theoretical analyses as well as the practical implementation studies regarding the tradeoff between system performance and model-order subject to hardware and/or software constraints for signal processing applications. The new tradeoff measures are essential in this issue. Subject to these new tradeoff measures, novel model determination techniques and joint optimization approaches for parameter estimation, or hybrid models are encouraged to be addressed thereupon.

Original papers, previously unpublished and not currently under review by another journal, are solicited for this special issue. The scope of this special issue includes, but is not limited to:

* new measures, concepts and theories of the model determination in the tradeoff among system performance, hardware, software for general signal processing applications

* trade-off oriented model-order determination for autoregressive (AR), moving-Average (MA), autoregressive-moving-average (ARMA) signals and systems

* signal processing applications for the system performance optimization subject to the resource constraints, i.e., storage space, algorithm complexity, etc.

* optimal model-based array signal processing subject to implementation constraints

* model-order selection or hybrid models for signal processing applications

* new studies on the tradeoff effects of improper model-order selections

* tradeoff learning for reference-based/blind and supervised/unsupervised paradigms

Submission information is available at

[Mycolleagues] CFP: Journal Special Issue: Convergence of Digital TV System and Service

Special Issue:

Convergence of Digital TV Systems and Services

International Journal of Digital Multimedia Broadcasting

The migration from analog to digital of the broadcasting technologies, already well-consolidated for satellite systems, is becoming a reality also for terrestrial transmission. The digital terrestrial television (DTT) is also evolving to offer interactive services and a degree of flexibility which can be exploited to offer tailored application to users which includes, for instance, interactivity, different levels of personalization and innovative location-based as well as context-aware services. A clear example of this trend is given by the rising success of the IPTV which allows for a degree of flexibility on the offered services unknown to the other more traditional broadcasting systems. Some satellite operators are starting to launch IPTV services using direct satellite links, moreover some terrestrial internet service providers are offering digital TV channels embedded in the IP streaming over XDSL. Furthermore, IPTV services are likely to be broadcast and wireless, with the income of new technologies such as WiMAX. Last but not least, TV and broadcast services for mobile users are also being deployed in many countries using DVB-H and will be soon available on an even broader scale thanks to its satellite counterpart, DVB-SH. In the near future, a set of different technologies able to offer personalized and customized services to different classes of users are expected in the area of the wireless broadcasting, and the convergence on technologies is auspicious. This concept entails different levels of convergence, namely, at terminal level (one device fits all), at service level (convergence of traditional fixed, mobile, and broadcast services), at transport and network levels with a common and standardized set of protocols, and at access layer thanks to the harmonic coexistence of different access technologies
This special issue aims to promote the state-of-the-art research works on the integration of DTT/satellite/IPTV systems for the broadcasting of multimedia and interactive services. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to
  • Advances in DVB-T/H/SH/T2 system and implementation
  • System and service for IPTV and Interactive TV
  • System, service, and implementation of ISDB-T/S, CMMB, T/S-DMB, and MediaFLO
  • Digital TV with WiMax, LTE, and HSPA
  • Hybrid cellular/noncellular broadcasting
  • Source coding for mobile multimedia broadcasting
  • Channel coding, modulation, and signal processing techniques
  • Mobile TV and interactive multimedia broadcasting services
  • Field trials for mobile multimedia broadcasting
Authors should follow the International Journal of Digital Multimedia Broadcasting manuscript format described at the journal site http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijdmb/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:

[Mycolleagues] CFP--CoPE 2009 (the First International Workshop on Cooperation in Pervasive)

*Apologies if you receive multiple copies*

---------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
----------------------------

The First International Workshop on Cooperation in Pervasive
Environments
(CoPE 2009)
http://www.cse.nd.edu/~darts/cope.html
in conjunction with IEEE PerCom 2009 (http://www.percom.org)

The continuous emergence of powerful personal handheld devices and
smart phones are redefining the pervasive computing paradigms of the
past. The questions this workshop aims to discuss are:
* How does the ubiquity of personal communication devices enable and
support cooperative activities?
* What are the technical challenges that must be overcome to achieve
seamless cooperation?
* What are the challenges in discovering and disseminating content
given energy and form factor constraints of mobile devices?

The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from
both academia and industry to foster a discussion on key research
challenges in content sharing and dissemination, cooperative
activities, mobile search, and security and privacy issues in
pervasive environments. Additionally, the workshop forum will provide
an opportunity to explore new business models and act as a soundboard
for discussing bold new ideas in the area. While the main purpose is
to promote discussions in the design of cooperation and sharing
architectures, protocols, algorithms, middleware, services, and
applications for wireless systems, it also aims at increasing the
synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this
area. We therefore seek papers that address theoretical, experimental,
and work in-progress at all layers of pervasive environments, with the
focus on realistic application scenarios. The workshop aims to address
cooperation from both an application as well as a system design
standpoint. From the application perspective, the workshop encourages
submissions of studies of prototypes or real-world systems, including
demonstrations of these systems. Cooperation in such applications can
take many forms, including multimedia communications, interaction with
embedded sensing devices, etc. From the system point of view, the
workshop will solicit submissions that discuss architectures for
cooperative systems, resource management techniques, security
mechanisms, and other middleware or systems approaches for realistic
pervasive environments. We will also encourage submissions on "brave
new topics" that present futuristic ideas that have never previously
been explored. Topics covered by the workshop will include, but are
not limited to, the following:

* Application design, case studies, prototypes, real-world-systems
* Middleware technologies to support cooperation
* Content sharing and dissemination in mobile environments
* Context- and location-awareness
* Efficient search for and dissemination of information
* QoS, scalability, and energy efficiency in realistic pervasive systems
* Security/privacy aspects of mobile cooperation
* Payment and bartering techniques
* Multi-radio and multi-channel devices
* Network protocols for cooperative computing
* Opportunistic sensing, networking, and cooperation
* Mobile search and content discovery

Submission Instructions:
Authors are invited to submit manuscripts reporting original
unpublished research and recent developments in the topics related to
the workshop. Submissions should include an abstract, key words, and
email address of the corresponding author. The length of the papers
should be limited to 6 pages in standard IEEE camera-ready format
(double-column, 10-pt font). Submission of a paper should be regarded
as an undertaking that, should the paper be accepted, at least one of
the authors will register and attend the workshop to present the work.

Workshop Organizers:
Shivajit Mohapatra (Motorola Labs)
Christian Poellabauer (University of Notre Dame)
Aaron Striegel (University of Notre Dame)

Important Dates:
November 3, 2008: Paper due
December 19, 2008: Acceptance notification
January 7, 2009: Final camera ready paper due

[Mycolleagues] CFP: Sixth International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2009, May 26-29, 2009; Wuhan, China)

                                   ISNN2009 CALL FOR PAPERS

The Sixth International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2009) will be held in Wuhan, following the successes of previous events. Composed of three parts (Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang), Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province in central China with a long history and rich heritages. During the warrior-states period (481-221 BC), Wuhan is a part in Chu Kingdom It began to prosper as a commercial town about two-thousand years ago, when it was called Yingwuzhou (Parrot beach). During the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), the region became one of the most prosperous commercial centers along the Yangtze River. By the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-164 AD), Hankou was one of the four most famous cities in China. Today, Wuhan is an educational and industrial center and a hub of water and rail transportation in China.

ISNN 2009 aims to provide a high-level international forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present the state of the art of neural network research and applications in related fields. The symposium will feature plenary speeches given by world renowned scholars, regular sessions with broad coverage, and special sessions focusing on popular topics.

Prospective authors are invited to contribute high-quality papers to ISNN 2009. In addition, proposals for special sessions within the technical scopes of the symposium are solicited. Special sessions, to be organized by internationally recognized experts, aim to bring together researchers in special focused topics. Papers submitted for special sessions are to be peer-reviewed with the same criteria used for the contributed papers. Researchers interested in organizing special sessions are invited to submit formal proposals to ISNN 2009. A special session proposal should include the session title, a brief description of the scope and motivation, names, contact information and brief biographical information on the organizers.

Authors are invited to submit full-length papers (10 pages maximum) by the submission deadline through the online submission system. Potential organizers are also invited to enlist five or more papers with cohesive topics to form special sessions. The submission of a paper implies that the paper is original and has not been submitted under review or is not copyright-protected elsewhere and will be presented by an author if accepted. All submitted papers will be refereed by experts in the field based on the criteria of originality, significance, quality, and clarity. The authors of accepted papers will have an opportunity
to revise their papers and take consideration of the referees' comments and suggestions. Papers presented at ISNN 2009 will be published in the EI-indexed proceedings (Springer LNCS) and some selected good papers will be included in special issues of several SCI-indexed journals.

One of the key elements in the convergence of future networks and services to IP
technology is the efficient support of rich multimedia applications and services
over wireless networks including sensor and mesh networks. The delivery and
transport of multimedia in such wireless environments, to heterogeneous mobiles
and users, is very challenging. The multimedia services should face many
shortcomings caused mainly by the wireless channel unreliability and its sharing
among many users, limited bandwidth, random time-varying fading effect,
different protocols and standards, etc. Future multimedia services require
innovation and advances in better MAC and routing protocols, session
establishment and signaling architectures, cross-layer interaction and
optimization, QoS provisioning and continuity, adaptive transmission techniques,
and scalability support, among
others.

The purpose of this symposium is to solicit high-quality theoretical and

[Mycolleagues] IQ2S 2009 Workshop Submission Deadline is Approaching

We apologize if you received multiple copies of this message.

------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
------------------------------

The First International Workshop on Information Quality and Quality of Service for Pervasive Computing (IQ2S 2009)
Website: http://iq2s2009.i2r.a-star.edu.sg
In Conjunction with IEEE PerCom 2009 (http://www.percom.org)
Galveston, Texas, March 9-13, 2009

Quality of service (QoS) has been studied in various building blocks in pervasive computing, e.g., different QoS mechanisms are presented for wireless or wired networks, with QoS metrics being described in terms of delay, bandwidth, and/or data loss etc. The emerging pervasive computing is application-driven and mission-critical, therefore the information quality (IQ), such as the accuracy of target tracking or event detection, is also critical for the end users, service providers and the system designers. IQ and QoS provisioning for pervasive computing is challenging and difficult due to the resource-constrained, dynamic and distributed nature of the system, the weakness under security attacking, and the lack of a holistic design approach which takes into account the different types of resources and their inter-dependencies.

The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers in various aspects of IQ and QoS for pervasive computing. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

l            System architecture for IQ and QoS provisioning

l            IQ-oriented signal & information processing (e.g., source coding and data compression)

l            QoS for target/event detection, localization, tracking and classification

l            QoS for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks (including coverage and connectivity)

l            QoS for task mapping and scheduling

l            Cross-layer design for coordinated QoS (including IQ-QoS integration)

l            Adaptative IQ and QoS under dynamic environments

l            Trust, security and privacy issues in IQ and QoS

l            Development environments and programming languages for IQ and QoS

l            IQ and QoS for emerging pervasive computing applications, such as three-dimensional wireless sensor networks (like underwater sensor network), healthcare, and structural health monitoring

l            Prototype test-bed design, implementation, and field trials

to be held in conjunction with The IEEE 23th International Conference
on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA-09),
Bradford, UK, May 26-29, 2009

==================================================================

Aims and Scope
---------------
With the explosive deployment of mobile wireless devices recently,
Opportunistic Networking is becoming an increasingly popular area in
networking research, in which the assumption of having end-to-end
paths between the source and the destination is relaxed. Such networks
fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and
delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user
communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection
are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very
suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has
limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking
advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded
over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an
appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional
Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of
connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications,
Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate
end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are
very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios.

Topics of Interest
-----------------
Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems
and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related
to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out
interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over
highly-polish journal-style results. Topics of interest include, but
are not limited to:

* Advanced technologies for enabling opportunistic communication
* Architectures for opportunistic networks
* Applications for opportunistic networks
* Biological and social models for opportunistic communication
* Middleware services in opportunistic networks
* Dissemination and replication techniques for opportunistic networks
* Network and resource management techniques for opportunistic networks
* Trust and cooperation in opportunistic networks
* Security issues in opportunistic networks
* Transport and reliability issues in opportunistic networks
* Routing issues in opportunistic networks
* MAC layer issues and physical layer for opportunistic networks
* Simulation and modeling of Opportunistic networks
* Tools and techniques for designing, analyzing and building
opportunistic networks
* Opportunistic networks testbeds and measurements

[Mycolleagues] CfP - 5th Workshop on Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (WMAN 2009)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
5th Workshop on Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (WMAN 2009)
in conjunction with the 16th bi-annual
Conference on Communication in Distributed Systems (KiVS)
(German: ITG/GI - Fachtagung "Kommunikation in
Verteilten Systemen (KiVS)")

March 5 + 6, 2009, Kassel, Germany
http://www.kivs09.de/

Workshop URL: http://wman2009.cs.uni-bonn.de/
----------------------------------------------------------------------

General information:

Welcome to the Workshop on Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks! Based on the success
of the preceding WMAN workshops of 2007 back to 2002, the workshop will
also be organised for 2009. For the upcoming workshop, we are very
happy to introduce WMAN 2009 for the second time being hosted in the
context of the bi-annual ITG/GI conference on communication in
distributed systems (German: ITG/GI - Fachtagung "Kommunikation in
Verteilten Systemen") - see http://www.kivs09.de/.

Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) show a large interest in application
and protocol research. While the basic organization of the routing
tasks has been addressed for quite some time, the emerging areas
include auto-configuration, security and data privacy, or an efficient
use of various resources, such as bandwidth, energy, or memory.
Especially driven by the hand-held or mobile devices restrictions,
the lack of centralized managers, and a high dynamicity of users,
devices, and applications, known solutions to wire-line protocols,
mechanisms, and systems cannot be applied directly to MANETs.
Therefore, this workshop WMAN'09 combines in a coherent manner
questions from the lower radio transmission layer all the way up
to the application layer relevant in MANETs. Furthermore, dedicated
application scenarios, such as vehicle-to-vehicle communications or
submarine communications are of high interest.

Workshop paper topics include, but are not limited to:

• Basic Technologies (IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth)
• Architectures and protocols
• Routing mechanisms
• Scalability and simulations of performance
• Energy efficiency
• QoS for ad-hoc networks
• Auto-configuration and addressing
• Security and data privacy in ad-hoc networks
• Software platforms (middleware) for mobile applications
• Applications for ad-hoc network
• Location-based services and their deployment
• Context management for ad-hoc services
• Pricing models for commercial ad-hoc services
• Accounting schemes for ad-hoc services
• Management mechanisms of ad-hoc networks
• Self-configuration and self-organization in ad-hoc networks

Addressees of the workshop:

Goal of the WMAN workshop is to enable an effective interchange of
results and ideas among researchers, users, and product developers on an
international level - under the umbrella of research topics on wireless
mobile ad-hoc networks.

We encourage you to submit original papers describing research results
or practical solutions, as well as ongoing work or challenging new
research issues in the area of ad-hoc networks.

<Call for Papers>

Security and privacy have been the major concern when people design
computer networks and systems. In recent years, there has been
significant increase in network and system attacks, such as frauds,
distributed denial of service, viruses, worms, spyware, and malware,
etc, causing huge economical and social damage. To deal with rapidly
evolving threats today and more intelligent and automatic threats in the
future, we urgently need new security systems, at all times and in
real-time, to protect the networks and systems, without causing
performance penalty to normal operations.
Multi-core processors represent a major evolution in computing hardware
technology. Multi-core provides an application with more processing
power from the hardware perspective. However, there are still
significant software design challenges that must be overcome before the
vision of real-time defense system can be realised. The difficulty is
not in building multi-core hardware, but in concurrently programming
security systems in a way that lets them benefit from the continued
growth in CPU performance. Building such a multi-core supported security
system faces significant challenges. These challenges need to be
addressed under joint efforts from different areas such as concurrent
and parallel computing, network security, computer architecture,
computer communications, and others.
------------------

WWW in Ibero-America Alternate Track
------------------------------------

The "WWW in Ibero-America" alternate track will provide a forum for
academics and industry to present and discuss the latest progress of Web
technologies in the Ibero-American community.
The track will also serve as a platform for the world to better
understand the Internet in Ibero-America, and for Ibero-America to
listen to the world.
The technical program for the three-day track will include refereed
paper presentations, panels, and keynote speeches from some of most
influential leaders in Ibero-American industry and academia.

Scope
-----

We solicit original papers describing research in all areas of the Web
related to Ibero-America. In particular we welcome papers that address:

- Challenging issues raised by specific characteristics of the Web in
Ibero-America.
- Web phenomena related to Ibero-American culture, languages, and users.
- Emerging new Web applications and technologies in Ibero-America.

We encourage the Ibero-American community to submit quality papers whose
main contribution is due to the specificity of being applied to
Ibero-American environment and culture, thus providing a more focused,
in-depth, and interactive environment than will be possible in the main
conference, regardless their scientific originality or cutting-edge
character.

Submision Details

All accepted refereed papers will be included in the WWW 2009 conference
proceedings and published by the Association for Computing Machinery
(ACM) and will also be accessible to the general public via the
conference website.

Panels
------

Panels should focus on emerging technologies, controversial issues,
social singularities or unsolved problems in the Ibero-American World
Wide Web community to stimulate lively, thoughtful, and
thought-provoking debate. We expect the panelists to actively engage the
audience and help them gain a deeper understanding of the issues. The
goal of a panel is to debate and thus panels should always reflect more
than one point of view.

All areas of interests to Ibero-American WWW participants are acceptable
as a panel topic. Panel proposals will be accepted on the basis of their
audience appeal, credentials of panelists, originality, and focus on
disputed topics. A rolling acceptance policy will be followed: panel
submissions will be considered as they arrive, and while most will
receive deferred decisions, some may be immediately accepted or returned
to the proposer for improvement.

[Mycolleagues] MDM 2009 --- Deadline Extended to Nov. 15, 2008

* Due to multiple requests, abstract and paper submission deadlines extended to Nov. 15, 2008 *

===============================================================================================

The 10th International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM'09): Systems, Services and Middleware

May 18-21 2009, Taipei, Taiwan

http://adslab.cs.nctu.edu.tw/mdm2009/

CALL FOR PAPERS

===============

Since the debut in December 1999, the MDM series of conferences has established itself as a prestigious forum for the exchange of innovative and significant research results in mobile data management. The conference provides unique opportunities for researchers, engineers, practitioners, developers, and users to explore new ideas, techniques, and tools, and to exchange experiences.

In the past decade, we have witnessed significant advances in wireless communications and mobile technology, along with continuous appearance of versatile mobile gadgets and rapid growth in sensors and actuators. Meanwhile, high-precision outdoor and indoor positioning technology has become mature and available. A global, pervasive computing infrastructure that may profoundly change the way people live and work is emerging. Mobile and pervasive computing and communication are enabled at an unprecedented scale and density.

All these technological developments are expected to bring us a next wave of information revolution and change our society. However, as we move a step closer from mobile computing towards the grand vision of pervasive and ubiquitous computing, a number of challenges need to be overcome, especially when it comes to data-intensive applications: scale, variable and intermittent connectivity, location dependence and context awareness, bandwidth and power consumption, device size limitations, and multimedia delivery across hybrid networks.

Conventional issues in data management have to be reconsidered and reevaluated in this rapidly changing environment. Non-traditional issues including mobility, data semantics, context modeling, broadcast and multicast delivery, data availability, trust and privacy must also be addressed effectively. Additionally, starting from 2009, MDM will extend its scope to cover research issues in mobile systems, services and middleware.

=================================================================================

Aim of the Workshop

The aim of the workshop is to bring together a highly qualified group of people to present current state-of-art research and development in interrelated fields of cognitive radio and cognitive networking. To date much of the research in the cognitive networks/cognitive radio has focused on the development of dynamic and adaptive strategies, often referred to as ‘weak’ intelligence.  The next big gains in this field will be realized with increasing application of ever ‘stronger’ intelligence techniques, e.g. based on machine learning.  This fusion of wireless communications with the field of distributed artificial intelligence holds the promise of a new highly efficient and flexible communications paradigm, capable of supporting overlapping heterogeneous systems in pooled spectrum. Such intelligence techniques are ideally suited to the lower layers of the protocol stack, e.g. to influence routing, resource and spectrum assignment, and spectrum sensing decisions.  The workshop will highlight the newest trends in this emerging area, complementing it with first practical implementations and demonstrations in this field. COGCOM seeks papers dealing with architectural issues, theoretical studies, new paradigms, enabling technologies for cognitive wireless networks, practical implementations, and policy issues. Besides the technical insights, the workshop will provide a supportive environment for technical discussions between like-minded researchers.

****************************************************************************************
Recently, wireless mesh networking is attracting significant interest from academia,
industry, and standard organizations. With several favorable characteristics, such
as dynamic self-organization, self-configuration, self-healing, easy maintenance,
high scalability and reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been advocated
as a cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile connectivity and
ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking, enterprise networking,
or community networking. Despite recent advances, and the technical accumulations
from more than a decade's research effort in mobile ad hoc networks, many research
issues remain in all protocol layers of wireless mesh networks. For example, the
introducing of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio,
multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the design of
physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application scenarios, such as all-wireless
office, are urging researchers to address enhanced QoS support and various security
issues in the design of different protocol layers for wireless mesh networks.

This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers who share
interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. The main purpose is to
promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of architectures,
protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for wireless networks. It also aims
at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this
area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress
at the all layers of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks, from application layer to the
physical layer.

Topics covered by the workshop will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Multi-radio and  multi-channel wireless mesh networking
Multi-hop wireless communications and ad hoc networking
MAC protocols (IEEE 802.11, 802.15, 802.16, 802.20, and beyond)
Routing, scheduling, and channel assignment protocols
Quality of Services provisioning
Multimedia communications over mesh and ad hoc networks
Network deployment, localization, and synchronization
Topology construction and maintenance
Modeling and performance evaluations
Cross layer optimizations
Power-aware and energy-efficient protocols and algorithms
Intelligent system techniques for mesh and ad hoc networks
Testbed, prototype, and practical systems
Novel applications of mesh and ad hoc networks
Vehicular mesh and ad hoc networks
Wireless sensor networks
Self-adaptive and self-organizing wireless networking systems

[Mycolleagues] CfP SCENES - Workshop on Scenarios for Network Evaluation Studies

Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this Call for Papers
=================================================================

The First Workshop on
Scenarios for Network Evaluation Studies
(SCENES 2009)
http://www.scenes-workshop.org

Rome, Italy
March 6th, 2009

to be held in conjunction with
SIMUTools 2009.

CALL FOR PAPERS

For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models
and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless
networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and
signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide
more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and
then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit
papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various
wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace
measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are
also welcome.

The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and
activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at
increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in
this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related, theoretical, and
work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios.

The topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
* Classification of scenarios
* Challenges in trace acquisition
* Tools for mobility, traffic and propagation modelling
* Methods in localization and tracking to acquire accurate movement traces
* Movement trace measurement architectures
* Characterization of movement traces
* Mobility modelling
* Validation of mobility models
* Traffic measurement, traffic characterization, traffic modelling
* Combined mobility and traffic modelling
* Characterization of signal propagation
* Propagation modelling
* Impact of mobility on radio characterization
* Impact of scenario modelling on performance

Authors are invited to submit full papers and work-in-progress papers for
presentation at the workshop. Papers (no more than 8 camera-ready pages in ACM
conference proceedings format) should describe original, previously unpublished
work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop, or journal.
For detailed submission instructions, together with format files, see the SCENES
website. All submissions will be handled via EDAS: http://edas.info/7006

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing is a networking and distributed computing
paradigm which allows the sharing of computing resources and services
by direct, symmetric interaction between computers. The advance in
mobile wireless communication technology and the increasing number of
mobile users, extend the arena of P2P computing to encompass mobile
devices and wireless networks. The special characteristics of mobile
environments, such as highly variable connectivity, disconnection,
location-dependency, resource contraints, and diversity in wireless
networks as well as carrier-grade performance requirements bring new
challenges for research in mobile P2P communication and computing.

MP2P'09 is intended to serve as a continuing forum for scientists and
engineers in academia and industry to exchange and discuss their
experiences, new ideas, and research results about all aspects of mobile
P2P computing and communications. It will address the challenges,
technologies, and architectures leading to real-world solutions that
provide users with direct access and control of their critical peer-based
information and services, regardless of location or device.

The principal theme of MP2P'09 is the peer-to-peer paradigm as used in

***************************************************************************************************

Nanotechnology is fundamentally changing the field of networking in medicine, computing, and sensing. Interesting applications of nano-networking include devices that enable delivery of targeted drugs directly into cancerous tumors or the use of nano robots to conduct inspection in harsh environments. The small size of micro and nanoscale devices imposes constraints on communication, information processing and propulsion. As the fields of nano and molecular computing come together, it has created a rich avenue of interdisciplinary research that will shape the future of nano and molecular information networks. This workshop aims to bring together researchers from the disciplines of biology, nano engineering, and computer science to address the communication and information processing issues in nano and molecular networks. Hybrid classical-quantum systems are being developed that are beginning to address the above challenges.

[Mycolleagues] SPECIAL ISSUE on Security and Privacy in wireless sensor and ad hoc networks

Sorry for receiving multiple copies.

Call For Papers
Ad Hoc Networks (Elsevier) Journal
SPECIAL ISSUE:
"Privacy and Security in Wireless Sensor and Ad Hoc Networks"

Wireless sensor and ad hoc networks have many applications in military,
homeland security and other areas. Security is critical for such networks
deployed in a hostile environment. In civilian applications, however,
privacy concerns of these networks could become a more serious impediment to
their popular adoption. Providing privacy and security in wireless sensor
and ad hoc networks is more challenging than those in traditional wired
networks because wireless communications use shared medium and thus are
vulnerable to many attacks. Providing privacy and security in sensor
networks is further complicated by the network scale, the highly constrained
system resources and the difficulty of dealing with node compromises.

The main purpose of this special issue is to promote further research
interests and activities on privacy and security in wireless sensor and ad
hoc networks.
We are interested in analytical, experimental, and systems-related papers in
various aspects of privacy and security in wireless sensor and ad hoc
networks. Topics of interest include:

* Key distribution and management
* Privacy issues in wireless sensor networks
* Security and Privacy issues in vehicular networks
* Location privacy and source anonymity
* Secure localization and secure routing protocols
* Trust management
* Secure data aggregation
* Authentication and authorization
* Study of attack strategies, attack modeling
* Study of tradeoffs between security and system performance
* Denial of service attacks and prevention
* Cross layer security and privacy attacks and solutions

Authors are requested to prepare their papers according to the Guide For
Authors on http://www.elsevier.com/locate/adhoc and to submit their paper to
the online submission and reviewing system, at http://ees.elsevier.com/adhoc.
They should choose the article type, Special Issue-Privacy & Security in
WSN.

Important Dates:
Submission Deadline: November 3, 2008
