[Tccc] CFP : ACM NSDR 2010 workshop (co-located with MobiSys'10). Deadline: Apr 9.

CALL FOR PAPERS

4th ACM Workshop on Networked Systems for Developing Regions:
NSDR 2010
(now merged with the ACM Wireless Networks and Systems for Developing
Regions Workshop - WiNS-DR)
Co-located with the 8th Annual International Conference on Mobile
Systems, Applications and Services (MobiSys 2010)

San Francisco, CA, USA
June 15th, 2010
http://www.dritte.org/nsdr10

Important Dates

* Submission Deadline: April 9, 2010 (23:59 PST)
* Notification: May 3, 2010
* Camera-ready: May 17, 2010
* Workshop: June 15, 2010

Background

Following three successful workshops of NSDR at SIGCOMM 2007, SIGCOMM
2008 and SOSP 2009, the 4th ACM Workshop on Networked Systems for
Developing Regions (NSDR'10) will provide a venue for researchers to
propose and discuss ideas concerning the design, implementation and
evaluation of new computing and communications technologies to support
the sustainable development of developing regions. The 4th NSDR
workshop is also merging efforts with the ACM Wireless Networks and
Systems for Developing Regions workshop (WiNS-DR) which was co-located
with MobiCom 2008.

More than a billion, less fortunate, people on this planet survive on
less than a dollar a day. Appropriate Information and Communication
Technologies for Development (ICTD) has the potential to significantly
impact the lives of many in the bottom billion. The decreasing cost
and increasing access to information and communication technologies
(e.g., mobile phones) are rapidly enabling access to new services and
markets for previously disconnected populations. However, due to a
variety of factors, including cost, literacy, education, and
organizational capacity, conventional approaches to technology design
and implementation are often not relevant. Addressing this requires
engagement of several disciplines, including but not limited to
economics, sociology, anthropology, and political science, and
expertise in a variety of application areas - including government,
health, finance and agriculture. Thus, in addition to considering the
specifics of networking protocols and architectures, the aim of the
workshop is to consider the entire system by which networking and
communication is provided, all the key technical stakeholders, and the
overall system lifecycle from economic modeling to deployment.

NSDR specifically focuses on the technical networking and systems
research challenges that arise in the development of new computing
solutions appropriate for developing regions where conventional
solutions are often inappropriate and the development of new research
approaches and innovative designs and techniques is often
required. NSDR solicits papers that either highlight important
networking and systems challenges in this space or describe the
deployment and evaluation of novel technologies or applications that
address a specific need. We encourage submission of position papers or
the results of preliminary work describing interesting, original,
previously unpublished ideas or results pertaining to the design,
implementation and/or evaluation of networks and systems for
developing regions.

Papers, Topics of Interest

We encourage submission of position papers or the results of
preliminary work describing interesting, original, previously
unpublished ideas or results pertaining to the design, implementation
and/or evaluation of networks and systems for developing
regions. Accepted papers will:

* Propose new research directions;
* Target a specific application;
* Inform design and/or deployment; and/or
* Generate lively debate at the workshop.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

* Low-cost wireless connectivity
* Intermittent and delay-tolerant systems
* Rural network planning and spectrum management protocols and
techniques
* Mechanisms for emergency and urgent communications
* Location-aware systems
* Power-efficient systems
* Low-cost computing devices
* Mobile systems and applications
* Middleware and mechanisms for minimizing energy, latency and
storage (caching etc)
* Adapting content and applications for local languages
* User interfaces for low-literacy populations
* Shared access devices and infrastructure, including
personalization and privacy concerns
* Design and evaluation of applications and in-depth case studies
in the areas of public health, microfinance, agriculture,
e-governance, education, monitoring, disaster management, etc.

Submission Instructions

Submissions must be no greater than 6 pages (six pages) in length
(including figures and references), must use a minimum 10pt font and
minimum 1inch margins, must be in the form of a PDF file, and must
follow formatting guidelines and instructions at

http://www.dritte.org/nsdr10/submit.html

Submissions that deviate from these guidelines will be rejected

[Tccc] CFP: Recent Advance on Distributed Sensor Systems & Applications

CALL FOR PAPERS [in PDF]

Journal of Communications (JCM, ISSN 1796-2021)

Recent Advance on Distributed Sensor Systems & Applications

Applications are always the original driving force for researches, particularly in the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) area, which is highly utility-oriented. WSNs have emerged as a new information paradigm for distributed real-time and embedded systems, where the energy consumption and the data process and storage capacity of the sensor nodes must be taken into account. Example applications include environment monitoring, emergency response, critical infrastructure protection, medical care, intelligent transportation, and smart manufacturing. However, finding killer applications for WSNs is still a hard task that is heavily pursued.

This special issue aims at presenting innovative and significant research on the design, implementation, usage, and evaluation of wireless sensor systems, applications, and novel techniques, especially in a distributed environment. We seek papers that take a broad systems perspective rather than focus narrowly on low-level components. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

l Sensor networks applications, architectures, protocols, Tools, systems, and algorithms

[Tccc] LAST CFP: WiMAN 2010 - In Conjunction with ICCCN'10 - FIRM DEADLINE: March 31!

The Fourth IEEE International Workshop on Wireless Mesh and Ad Hoc
Networks (WiMAN 2010)

http://people.hofstra.edu/Habib_M_Ammari/WiMAN_Workshop2010.html

In conjunction with ICCCN 2010

Zurich, Switzerland, August 2-5, 2010

CALL FOR PAPERS

Workshop Objectives

Recently, wireless mesh and ad hoc networking is attracting significant
interest from academia, industry, and standard organizations. With
several favorable characteristics, such as dynamic self-organization,
self-configuration, self-healing, easy maintenance, high scalability and
reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been advocated as a
cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile connectivity and
ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking,
enterprise networking, or community networking. Despite recent advances,
and the technical accumulations from more than a decade of research
efforts in mobile ad hoc networks, many research issues remain in all
protocol layers of wireless mesh networks. For example, the introduction
of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio,
multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the
design of physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application
scenarios, such as all-wireless office, are urging researchers to
address enhanced QoS support and various security issues in the design
of different protocol layers for wireless mesh networks.

This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers

[Tccc] call for papers: Mobile WiMax

Call for Papers
A Special Issue of Computer Networks
On "Mobile WiMAX"
Mobile services enable voice communications at home, office, and
outdoors. Thus, we are accessible all the time. Similarly, wireless data
networks enable data connectivity even when we are away from our
desktop computers. Thus, we are online all the time. In a nutshell,
wireless networks have been shaping the life styles of the users for the
last two decades. Nevertheless, the tide has turned, and now user
requirements are once again shaping the technology. Today, users want
the bandwidth at the desktop to be made available in a ubiquitous
manner for different devices such as laptops, netbooks, and
smartphones. DSL-equivalent bandwidth should be made available
anywhere, even on-the-move. To make things worse, mobile devices and
applications are becoming more bandwidth-hungry day by day to
enhance user experience. Applications that were once available only to
desktop computers are now ported to mobile devices. Most notebook
computers run on wireless even at home or in the office. With the
deployment of IPTV services, we are now discussing triple- and quadplay.
Therefore, today's wireless wide-area technologies must provide
high data rates with proper QoS provisioning for nomadic and mobile
users.
This is where Mobile WiMAX diverges from most other wireless
networks. Designed for high data-rate and QoS provisioning as the
primary objectives, Mobile WiMAX is the best candidate for nextgeneration
wireless technology. Mobile WiMAX is now under
consideration by the ITU to become the IMT-Advanced technology to
provide a very high speed Mobile Internet with superior QoS for our nextgeneration
wireless communication needs. Thus, research on Mobile
WiMAX fosters support of very high data rates with better QoS support
while enabling more seamless mobility.
About the Mobile WiMAX Special Issue
This special issue is dedicated to capturing the state-of-the-art and the recent advances in WiMAX technology.
Papers describing mathematical models, algorithms, protocols, tools, evaluation methods, and experimental studies
of computing and communication architectures are solicited for this special issue. Topics of interest include (but are
not limited to):
• Modulation and Coding for WiMAX
• Channel estimation, Measurement, and Modelling
• Antenna and MIMO techniques
• MAC, Scheduling, QoS provisioning
• Mobility Management and Handover
• Radio resource allocation, Cross-layer design
• Power management (sleep mode, idle mode, DCR mode)
• Co-existence with other radio networks
• Network planning, Spectrum management, and Regulations
• Deployment, Field Trials, Inter-operation, New Services
• New Service Models
• End-to-End Network Architecture

[Tccc] CFP: "QoS Provision in Wireless Sensor Networks" - IEEE DCOSS'10

Apologies if you receive multiple copies

C A L L F O R P A P E R S

QPWSN'10

1st International Workshop on "QoS Provision in Wireless Sensor Networks"

http://www.icte.uowm.gr/qpwsn10/

organized in conjunction with

The 6th IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor
Systems (DCOSS '10)

23 June 2010, Santa Barbara, California

http://www.dcoss.org/

Important Dates:

Manuscript Submission: 23 April 2010

Acceptance Notification: 7 May 2010

Camera ready: 21 May 2010

Scope and Overview:

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a modern kind of wireless networks,
where numerous monitoring devices are interconnected to communicate their
collected data. The literature has not paid yet enough attention to QoS in
WSNs. This is mainly due to the currently unclear purpose and usage of the
WSNs, which significantly differ from the traditional networks. However,
modern WSN applications require traffic differentiation, guaranteed
end-to-end delivery, low delay jitter, and high throughput. The sensors'
limited resources and energy autonomy combined with the unreliable wireless
medium make QoS support in WSN certainly challenging. Thus, new designs for
offering QoS in WSNs are becoming necessary.

This Workshop will try to analyze modern methods of providing QoS support in
WSNs, explain all related issues, highlight the problems that arise when
trying to provide QoS demanding services over wireless networks, present the
theoretical background, bring out related solutions given so far, and
moreover, exhibit the latest research concepts and relevant ideas regarding
near-future implementations.

Topics of Interest:

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Multimedia transmissions over WSNs

- QoS capable routing algorithms for WSNs

- Traffic prioritization schemes for WSNs

- QoS supportive protocols for medium access control in WSNs

- Power saving mechanisms for WSNs

- Medical content transfer using sensors for telemedicine

- Categorized data communications over environment monitoring WSNs

- Novel applications for QoS aware WSNs

- Cross-layer techniques for QoS provision in WSNs

- Simulation of QoS aware WSNs

- Analytical models for QoS aware WSNs

Paper submission:

Papers are solicited in the IEEE proceedings format with up to eight (8)
pages. Papers in PDF format must be submitted via Easy Chair by using the
following URL: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=qpwsn10. All
submissions must be original prior unpublished work and not under review
elsewhere. All papers will be reviewed and selected based on their
originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. Accepted papers must be
presented at the workshop, will appear in the DCOSS proceedings and will be
included in the IEEE digital library. Please email to the workshop co-chairs

FWIW, we'll be posting additional info on this, but for the list to
consider:

Infocom base registration of 750USD (187USD/day) includes:
4 days of meeting, incl. cont. breakfast, lunches, breaks
(Monday's 'miniconference' and 'work in progress')
a full dinner buffet (our 'reception' is actually a full dinner)

Previous comparisons assumed this was a 3-day cost, and it turned out a
bit higher than comparable meetings (e.g., Sigcomm), but considering the
extent of services, we might even be considered lower cost (Sigcomm 2009
was 450EU = 600USD, or 200USD/day).

Future registration forms will make the extent of services provided more
clear, but this might be useful to consider. This doesn't address all
ComSoc meetings, of course.

***** Paper submission deadline extended to April 2 *****

Motivation
==========

The workshop follows the previous SPeL 2008
(http://software.ucv.ro/~epopescu/spel2008/) and SPeL 2009
(http://software.ucv.ro/~epopescu/spel2009/) workshops held in
conjunction with the SAINT 2008 conference
(http://www.icta.ufl.edu/saint08/) and WI/IAT 2009 conference
(http://www.wi-iat09.disco.unimib.it/) respectively. The general topic of
the workshop is the social and personal computing for web-supported
learning communities. This year, the workshop focuses on social and
intelligent systems in education, with particular interest on aspects
related to data, information, and knowledge within such systems.

Web-based learning is moving from centralized, institution-based systems
to a decentralized and informal creation and sharing of knowledge. Social
software (e.g., blogs, wikis, podcasts, and media-sharing services) is
increasingly being used for e-learning purposes, helping to create novel
learning experiences and knowledge. In the world of pervasive Internet,
learners are also evolving: the so-called "digital natives" want to be in
constant communication with their peers, they expect an individualized
instruction and a personalized learning environment, which automatically
adapt to their individual needs.

Social learning is based on creating and sharing information and knowledge
within the learning community and personalized learning can only take
place if enough data about learners (e.g., their behavior, actions,
characteristics, and so on) have been gathered and correctly analyzed and
interpreted. For both social and personalized learning, the role of data,
information, and knowledge is essential. In this context, the workshop
addresses the challenges of social and personal computing in Web-supported
learning communities focusing on aspects related to acquiring and managing
data, information, and knowledge. Its aim is to provide a forum for
discussing new trends and initiatives in this area, including research
about the planning, development, application, and evaluation of
intelligent e-learning systems, where people can learn together in a
personalized way through social interaction with other learners.

Topics of interest
==================

The workshop topics cover all aspects of intelligent systems in
e-learning, particularly related to issues about data, information, and
knowledge in social and personalized learning, including (but not limited
to):
- Ontologies and semantic Web for e-learning
- Metadata, folksonomies and tagging

[Tccc] CFP: MobiCPS 2010 - The 1st IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Cyber-Physical Systems

[Please accept our apologies if you received multiple copies of this call]

CALL FOR PAPERS

MobiCPS 2010 - The 1st IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Cyber-Physical
Systems
http://www.cpschina.org/mobicps

In conjunction with UIC2010
Xi'an, China
26-29 October, 2010

We are currently on the brink of a revolutionary transformation from
stand-alone embedded systems to ubiquitous cyber-physical systems (CPS) that
bridge the virtual world of computing and communications and the real world.
Cyber-physical systems are tight integrations of computation, networking,
and physical objects, in which embedded devices are networked to sense,
monitor and control the physical world. It is believed that CPS will
transform how we interact with the physical world just like the Internet
transformed how we interact with one another. In particular, there is a
trend to build CPS upon wireless and mobile networks as a consequence of
unprecedented proliferation of these technologies in recent years. In
addition to wireless sensors and actuators, the number of mobile devices
that can support wirelessly networked cyber-physical applications has
exploded. Some usual examples include smartphones, PDAs, autonomous robots,
wearable computers, among others. Ubiquitous applications and services
enabled by mobile CPS are opening up great opportunities for improving the
quality of our daily life. To fully explore the potential of mobile CPS,
however, significant challenges are yet to be overcome.

MobiCPS 2010 is an international forum for researchers and practitioners to
present innovative ideas and results on all aspects of mobile cyber-physical
systems, including theoretical foundations, techniques and methods, tools
and platforms, prototypes, and practical applications. Besides research

[Tccc] CFP: First IEEE Workshop on Smart Grid Networking Infrastructure

===================================================================
Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this mail
===================================================================

The 1st IEEE LCN Workshop on Smart Grid Networking Infrastructure
http://granite.csep.umflint.edu/IEEELCN-SGNI2010/index.html

In conjunction with
IEEE Local Computer Networks (LCN'10)
Denver, Colorado, USA
11-14 October 2010

Call for Papers

Under an aging and ineffectual energy distribution system, unprecedented
initiatives have recently been instituted in many countries to ameliorate
the electric grid with the Smart Grid. The key facilitators of the Smart
Grid are two-way energy and information flow between the suppliers and
consumers. The conventional supply-chain of the energy is being expanded
to include alternative sources of energy, such as solar, wind, tidal,
biomass, etc. from a variety of distributed small and large energy
producers. The consumers are becoming more active participants by means of
such devices as smart meters, smart thermostats, smart appliances.

The grand vision of autonomic, self-healing Smart Grid with a dynamic
demand response model with pricing has many challenges, not the very
least, from the perspective of the networking infrastructure and
distributed computing. The sheer size of the contemplated Smart Grid of
the future is to rival the Internet in the number of participants. The
scalability, lack of standards for seamless integration of diverse
equipment and devices, and missing features and applications to bring
about the expected benefits are just beginning to get underway in the
networking research community. The purpose of this workshop is to form a
platform to exchange ideas among interested parties for the Smart Grid
from the perspective of the networking infrastructure.

Original, unpublished and unsubmitted work is sought in terms of
algorithms, techniques, architectures, position papers, visionary
approaches and modeling to enable the resilient, reliable and secure Smart
Grid. One of the main themes of the workshop is the real-time or near
real-time communications with guarantees. When the number of devices, from
smart appliances to the Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), and the
possibilities of di erent technologies, especially for the last-mile, are
considered, Quality-of-Service (QoS) provisioning becomes a challenging
endeavor. Other focal points comprises security, data aggregation, Smart
Grid monitoring and self-healing. Two-way information flow and the
voluminous data to be generated by the Intelligent Electronic Devices
(IED) are likely to put signi cant strains on the privacy and security of
the data as well as its dissemination in the distributed setting as
envisioned for the Smart Grid.

The workshop program invites papers on various aspects of the Smart Grid
Networking topics including, but not limited to, the following:

* Wireless communications for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
and for the Smart Grid last mile
* Service-Oriented and QoS architectures (Di Serv, IntServ, MPLS,
etc.) for Smart Grid
* Security and QoS trade-o s in Smart Grid
* Home Area Networking (HAN) technologies with smart meters (OpenHAN,
sensors, Zigbee, etc.)
* Secure and flexible data aggregation, privacy considerations, and
network data anonymization
* Mobility issues of maintenance and installation dispatch teams of
the Smart Grid
* Demand Response with dynamic pricing on a real-time (or near
real-time) basis, such as Open Automated Demand Response (Open ADR)
* Intelligent status monitoring, fault detection, isolation,
self-healing, outage management, disaster prevention and recovery
systems, real-time load balancing, dynamic discovery
* Energy-efficient transmission switching and routing technologies for
the Smart Grid infrastructure and communications
* Neighborhood Area Networks (NAN) using wireless mesh networks
* ANSI C12.22 and IP interoperability and other compatibility issues
in the Smart Grid
* Multicast and multicast data authentication for the Smart Grid
* Wide area situational awareness (near real-time) monitoring and
performance
* Communications among Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) and
end-to-end IED services
* QoS assurances for a wide range of applications (including NASPInet
Class A, B, C, D) with different bandwidths, latency and reliability
requirements
* Next-generation Distributed Network Protocol (DNP3) and
Inter-Control Center Protocol (ICCP)
* Precision time synchronization protocols for the Smart Grid for
real-time operation (Wide area time domain GPS synchronized sampling
systems (WATSS) )
* Wide area monitoring, protection, automation, communications, and
control (WAMPACC) message exchange protocols, Wide Area Measurement
System (WAMS), SCADA
* Networked Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for wide-area monitoring
and forensics of the Smart Grid disturbances
* Transport layer mechanisms for PMU high streaming data applications,
such as Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP)
* Disseminating power grid status information within and between power
utilities
