Welcome to the IT PRO newsletter for Friday 7 March 2008.
Are the dominant days of CeBIT over?
If this year's show is anything to go by, then yes, CeBIT is dead!
For over 20 years, CeBIT has provided an important outlet for the technology industry to showcase current and emerging technology, network with users, and enable suppliers and distributors to get a handle on the state of the market. Even when other mega shows such as Comdex began to die, CeBIT lived on, and successfully evolved to remain relevant to a constantly changing and fickle audience.
However, time has finally caught up with CeBIT and if this year's show is any indicator, its era is coming to an end.
The show this year has lacked the excitement and wonder that usually fills attendees, something that would at least partially make up for the excruciating foot pain that one inevitably suffers after prowling the vast showground for more than a few hours. CeBIT, for me, has always managed to rekindle that kid in a toyshop feeling, while at the same time providing a serious business and/or information gathering opportunity.
The industry can survive without CeBIT, but it should not have to. Both the organisers and the exhibitors need to rethink their approach to this event, in particular making sure that in 2009 they all use it for something substantial. Attending CeBIT as a member of the public is not cheap; being an exhibitor is even more expensive. Stand holders need to make better use of their investment, and at the same time ensure that the people attending the show don't have their time and money wasted.

REVIEWS
Konica Minolta PagePro 4650EN
Verdict: A robust, workgroup laser printer, with twin paper trays and multiple connections as standard, but no duplexer or direct print - both are options. Print speed isn't up to manufacturer's claims but print quality is good and maintenance is straightforward.

Fujitsu Siemens PRIMERGY BX600 S3
Verdict: Fujitsu Siemens has been busy with its blade server as the BX600 S3 delivers plenty of new features including some unique quad-core Opteron server blade configurations and all offered at a very competitive price.

Apple MacBook Air
Verdict: As stylish a notebook as you could hope for, but in its quest for thinness, Apple has sacrificed a lot. It's lovely to use in many respects but one can't help feeling that the Air is a triumph of style over practicality.
