AOL snaps up Bebo for $850 million, Will Windows 7 arrive sooner than we thought?

Dear SungHoon,

Welcome to the IT PRO newsletter for Friday 14 March 2008.
If ever you needed proof that the world of IT is full of surprises, this week delivered it.
The late breaking news yesterday afternoon was that AOL, the one-time ISP giant - now a shell of its former self, has pulled off a surprise takeover of Bebo, the popular consumer social networking service.
It's another example of the value of social networking within the tech sector. Bebo has 40 million users, and is the leading social media service in the UK. It has none of the baggage of Facebook and is nowhere near as visually awful as MySpace, which should make integrating it into AOL's online properties easier.
Bebo is not coming cheap, costing AOL a massive $850 million (£425 million) - in cash! Either AOL found a lot of loose change down the back of the sofa, or the acquisition of Bebo represents a very big potentially final roll of the dice for this one-time internet giant, as it tries to reinvent itself as a content-driven service rather than a provider of commoditised connectivity.
Whether social networking is enough to revitalise AOL is doubtful, but considering the values being placed on the Facebook and MySpace businesses, AOL appears to have snagged a bargain that will likely grow quickly and significantly in value, pumping up the overall value of the AOL business at a time when parent Time Warner is considering options for it, including a sale or demerger.
