IEEE PIMRC ’08 International Workshop on

Efficiency

‘Key’ to Next Generation of Mobile Radio Access Technologies

On average,  every 18 months we experience the emergence of a new air-interface standard or the enhancement of an existing one. The justification for this has always been a perceived improvement in “efficiency”.  To complement the existing research work being undertaken to improve efficiency, there is also a need to consider  the most appropriate definition of efficiency, balancing the needs of spectrum licensees, owners and users, and to identify the circumstances which will allow the maximum efficiency to be realised.

This full day workshop aims to bring together internationally-leading academic and industrial thinking, to discuss what “efficiency” means and to highlight what technologies need to be developed to achieve a long-promised efficient mobile radio access system.

Scope and Objectives

In view of current standardisation activities in 3GPP, IEEE and ITU-R, this workshop focuses on presenting and debating advanced techniques and technologies that have the potential to be considered in future standards to make the radio access solutions highly efficient, as well as developing an appropriate definition and metric for efficiency that covers both system and  link aspects in a multi-cell, multi-service and multi-user environment with different network topologies.

Specifically, the workshop proposes to address the following issues:

  • The best combination of Air-Interface techniques
  • Spectrum sharing and Cognitive Radio: Algorithms and the expected gains
  • Cross Layer operation and optimisation
  • Advanced MAC and RRM Techniques
  • Self-Organizing Networks
  • Implication of system architecture (cellular / multihop / mesh) on above techniques

This full day workshop aims to bring together internationally-leading academic and industrial perspectives and thinking to highlight the key technologies and solutions and also debate on appropriate metric for “efficiency” itself.
