Developer Spotlight: Lancaster University's Real-World Testing Nokia Announces Four "Supernova" Devices Nokia recently introduced the first four mobile devices in its new "Supernova" line that lets consumers express themselves with stylish designs, personalization, and vibrantly hued, exchangeable covers. The new devices, based on the Series 40 platform, have been designed to appeal to style-conscious consumers, and they combine high levels of mobile functionality with a variety of music and Internet experiences. The Nokia 7610 Supernova features a slide design and comes with a choice of different-colored covers and front surfaces. Its innovative Theme Colorizer also lets consumers identify and capture colors, then apply them to the key illumination and wallpaper. Other features include a 3.2-megapixel camera and access to the Nokia WidSets service. The Nokia 7610 Supernova will ship in the third quarter and retail for 225 euros. The Nokia 7510 Supernova is based on Nokia's new Series 40 6th Edition platform. It is a fold phone featuring changeable covers, the WebKit Open Source Browser, Nokia Maps 1.2, push-to-open key, FM RDS radio, Flash Lite 3.0, Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, and MIDP Java™ 2.1 with additional Java APIs. The Nokia 7510 Supernova will ship in the fourth quarter and retail for 180 euros. The Nokia 7310 Supernova, based on Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1, includes a 2-megapixel camera, 4 gigabytes of memory (with microSD cards), two-inch QVGA display, USB 2.0 , Bluetooth 2.0, Flash Lite 2.1, TV out, and MIDP Java 2.1 with additional Java APIs. The Nokia 7310 Supernova will ship this quarter and retail for 155 euros. The Nokia 7210 Supernova features a slim design and a choice of "bubble gum pink" or "vivid blue" in a gloss finish. The device can play music sideloaded from a PC or purchased from Nokia Music Store, and it can manage music files with the new Nokia Music PC client. Other features include an SD memory card slot and 2-megapixel camera with one-click access to the Flickr photo-sharing service. New Series 40 6th Edition Expands Developer Opportunities Nokia recently introduced Series 40 6th Edition, bringing developers several new and exciting capabilities. Series 40 developers can now create applications for Nokia platforms that will also run on other manufacturers' devices with little or no change. That's because Series 40 6th Edition represents a continuing commitment by Nokia to support both MIDP 2.1 and the subset of the Mobile Service Architecture, JSR-248, that provides a common implementation of seven popular Java Specification Requests (JSRs). These implementations are shared with S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, and other manufacturers of Java mobile devices are also expected to implement JSR-248. Also supported by Series 40 6th Edition is the Location API for J2ME (JSR-179), which can use an external Bluetooth global positioning system (GPS) unit to obtain location information; this delivers great new opportunities for developers to create location-based applications. The new platform also supports the Wireless Messaging API 2.0 (JSR-205) with the inclusion of support for cell broadcast service (CBS) message handling. Series 40 6th Edition brings developers access to the Flash Lite 3 Player as a new standard feature. This enables the creation of advanced applications and content, such as animated "organic" wallpaper for Series 40 devices. The Series 40 user experience has been improved, too. Series 40 6th Edition offers a new browser based on the WebKit open source components WebCore and JavaScriptCore, extended WLAN capabilities, additional audio and video codecs with support for Windows Media Video (WMV) 9 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) 10, and an enhanced UI providing smooth-state transitions during navigation. Nokia plans to acquire Symbian Ltd., the U.K.-based creator and supplier of the Symbian OS that runs in many Nokia devices. To that end, Nokia recently offered 264 million euros to acquire the 52 percent of the shares of Symbian Ltd. it does not already own. When the offer is completed Nokia will own all of Symbian Ltd. Nokia officials call the acquisition a fundamental step in the establishment of the Symbian Foundation, recently announced by Nokia along with AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, and Vodafone. The companies have also agreed to create a single open mobile software platform by combining Symbian OS, the S60 platform, UIQ and Mobile Oriented Application Platform (MOAP). The foundation will provide a unified platform with a common UI framework, and a full platform will be available for all foundation members under a royalty-free license. New eLearning Module for Java™ ME Developers can learn to create Java Platform, Micro Edition, applications for Nokia platforms with a new Forum Nokia Developer eLearning module. The eLearning module introduces Java ME and provides a tutorial on how to begin developing Java ME applications. Topics covered include: the development process, the use of standard Java ME features, and the use of additional Java mobile information device profile (MIDP) APIs. Browse Forum Nokia's eLearning modules. Talk to the Guru: LBS Winner Lasse Mäki Forum Nokia's Talk to the Guru series welcomes Lasse Mäki to the conversation. Lasse is co-founder and CEO of Joikusoft, a Mobile Hotspot operator based in Espoo, Finland, and the technical force behind JoikuSpot, an application that turns Nokia S60 devices into Wi-Fi hot spots. Released this past February, JoikuSpot already has more than 200,000 users. It won the Grand Prize at the recent LBS Challenge APAC. Forum Nokia Developer Wiki Exceeds 5,000 Articles In just over 15 months the Forum Nokia Developer Wiki has grown to more than 5,000 user-generated articles, making it the largest wiki for mobile developers. Unlike most corporate wikis, Forum Nokia's is truly a social community with the vast majority of the content coming directly from individual contributors. Launched in March 2007, the Forum Nokia Wiki now attracts more than 400,000 page views a month with articles that range from simple code examples to detailed white papers. The wiki features helpful articles on all major programming languages and technologies, from Bluetooth to WidSets. Reflecting the global makeup of the developer community, much of the content on the Forum Nokia Wiki has been translated into Brazilian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Student Winners Announced in Mobile Innovation Challenge Teams from Denmark and Hungary have won the Forum Nokia Mobile Innovation Competition 2008 for Students with applications that push the boundaries of location-based services (LBS). The winning applications were recently demonstrated at the S60 Summit in Barcelona, Spain, where they attracted a good deal of attention. The two applications won not only for their technical innovation, but also for their commercial potential, backed by realistic business plans. The winners are:

Developer Spotlight: Lancaster University's Real-World Testing A camera phone that overlays imaginary 3-D spaceships over your office; mobile blogs for school children; a skin galvanometer that charts a walker's stress levels as he crosses a city. These are just a few of the futuristic mobile applications being created and tested by researchers at Lancaster University in the U.K. The university is a member of Forum Nokia PRO, Nokia's premier program for mobile developers, and the researchers are being led by Paul Coulton, a senior lecturer in the university's department of communications systems, co-manager of the Nokia Innovation Hub in the U.K., and a Forum Nokia Champion. Coulton's dozen or so graduate students collectively call themselves the Mobile Radicals.
