1. IEEE Members Loom Large Among Tech Elite
At Fortune magazine's annual Brainstorm Tech Conference, held in Half
Moon Bay, Calif., a by-invitation-only group of luminaries gathered to
discuss how technology can be applied to solve problems facing
humanity. As expected, IEEE members--invited because of their standing
in the world of technology--made up a significant number of speakers.
Find out what they discussed at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13570/80050759
2. Newsletter Spotlights IEEE Experts on Tech Topics
Want to keep up with important issues like telemedicine, clean energy, or
engineering education? Then check out the new monthly e-newsletter,
IEEE Engaging the World. Each issue focuses on a single tech topic with
articles describing IEEE's involvement in that area and interviews with
members who are experts in that field. To learn more, visit
http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13571/80050759
3. Online Store Stocks IEEE Gear
If you take pride in being an IEEE member, you can show it by using
IEEE-emblazoned items from the new online IEEE Merchandise
Collection. There you'll find jackets, T-shirts, hats, pens, coffee mugs,
umbrellas, beach towels, golf balls, a calculator, and more. Read on at

4. New System for Reporting Business Misconduct
IEEE has launched an anonymous reporting system for handling reports
of suspected impropriety. It will deal with financial misdeeds involving
IEEE business or the failure of IEEE members or staff to comply with the
organization's principles of business conduct. For more information, visit
http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13574/80050759
5. Upgrades Improve Recently Launched memberNet
Two recent upgrades to memberNet, IEEE's online community, have
made it easier to share information about yourself with other members.
Launched in June, memberNet is available to IEEE members at no
charge. Read about the improvements at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13575/80050759
6. Two Publications Garner Awards for Excellence
IEEE Women in Engineering magazine and IEEE-USA Today's Engineer
Digest have won top honors. They received APEX Awards for Publication
Excellence, given for outstanding graphic design, editorial content, and
overall communications in an annual competition sponsored by
Communications Concepts Inc. Read on at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13576/80050759

7. Indiana Section Celebrates 100 Years
The IEEE section in Fort Wayne, Ind.--where TV inventor Philo
Farnsworth began mass-producing TV sets--marked its 100th anniversary
in August. Read how the section celebrated at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13578/80050759
8. Solar Boats Train Students for the Future
The solar-powered machine familiar to most people is likely no more
complex than a calculator. But a group of engineering undergrads aimed
higher when it came to harnessing the power of the sun. They built and
raced solar-powered boats in the annual Solar Splash competition, held
on the campus of the University of Arkansas. http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13579/80050759
9. Making Machines and People See Eye to Eye
Patterns exist everywhere. Humans excel in recognizing small changes,
while machines can recognize massive amounts of data quickly. The
International Conference on Pattern Recognition, to be held from 8 to
11 December in Tampa, Fla., deals with how machines and humans can
work together to perform complex tasks. Learn more at

10. Web Page Highlights Benefits of Society Membership
IEEE has launched a new Web page that describes the benefits and
services of IEEE societies. You can learn about the featured societies'
upcoming events, read profiles of its members, and view lists of their
publications. Featured now are the IEEE Computer Society, the IEEE
Power & Energy Society, and the IEEE Power Electronics Society at
http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13582/80050759
11. Call for Papers for Special Issue of IEEE Potentials
IEEE Potentials is seeking articles geared to young engineers for a March
2009 issue. Articles should deal with cutting-edge technical ideas, advice
about professional development, or insights into the problem-solving
process. The deadline for submitting manuscripts is 1 December. For
more information, visit http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/13583/80050759
and for questions, e-mail Adrian Pais, GOLD representative for
Publication Services and Products, at <mailto:a.pais@ieee.org>
12. Member Dues: A Clarification
Several members questioned why the amount of their 2009 annual
renewal dues was higher than the US $129 rate for basic dues reported in
The Institute in September ["Dues to Rise $3"]. Your renewal invoice
reflects not only 2009 dues but also includes regional assessments based
on where you live. These additional assessments are returned to the
regions to support region, section, and chapter products, services, and
programs. These assessments vary from $4 to $45, depending on the
region. For more information, call +1 732 562 5501.
