Next-Generation Broadband Optical Access Network Technologies
Driven by ever-increasing users' demands for broadband services, worldwide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) rollout has recently surpassed thirty million users and is continuing to grow at a rapid rate. To realize various FTTx solutions, passive optical networks (PONs) have been considered as the most promising technology. Next-generation PONs are expected to deliver new and legacy services, both analog and digital, in a single converged conduit. One such example is the radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology which makes use of an unspecified spectrum to backhaul wireless signals from multiple remote antenna ports via one trunk fiber. Technology wise, continuing advancements in photonic ICs are poised to improve the total system cost-to-performance ratio. Meanwhile, rapid increase in the speed of digital integrated circuits has made advanced signal processing algorithms and capabilities applicable to fiber optic systems. Techniques such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), multi-level modulation, and forward error correction (FEC), are increasingly applied to fiber access system to greatly enhance the system performance while balancing the cost between silicon and photonics. In this issue, we solicit original contributions to the next-generation broadband optical access network technologies, systems, and applications. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following subject categories:
* Optical access network architecture design
* Optical access network components and systems
* New PON developments and testbeds
* WDM and OFDM PON technologies
* MAC and bandwidth allocation
* RoF network architecture and MAC
