In the last few years, a stimulating idea is fast emerging in the wireless scenario: the pervasive presence around us of a variety of “things” or
“objects”, such as devices, sensors, actuators, mobile phones, which, through unique addressing schemes, are able to interact with each others and
cooperate with their neighboring “smart” components to reach common goals. This novel paradigm, named “The Internet of Things” continues on the path
set by the concept of smart environments and paves the way to the deployment of numerous applications with a significant impact on many fields of
future every-day life. In this context, logistics, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Business/Process management, assisted living, e-health are
only a few examples of possible application fields in which this novel paradigm will play a leading role in the next future. Actually, many
challenging issues still need to be addressed and both technological and social nodes untied before the Internet of the Things idea being widely
accepted. Central issues are: making a full interoperability of such a devices possible, enabling their adaptation and autonomous behavior, as well
as guaranteeing trust, privacy and security.
The Tyrrhenian Workshop on Digital Communications is each year devoted to a specific theme in the area of digital communications and its applications.
This year it will focus on the “Internet of Things” due to the relevance of the research topics involved by such a concept as well as the interest
obtained by both public and private bodies (testified by the large number of funding opportunities at National, European and Trans-European level).
Topics of interest of the workshop are (but not limited to):
• Internet of Things infrastructures and applications
• Communication systems and network architectures
• Implementation and integration of smart items
• Mobile Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks
• Embedded systems
• Distributed processing (e.g. access, scheduling, radio resource management, etc.) systems
• Cooperation issues
• Network management and scalability
• Ubiquitous and wireless technologies
• Security and privacy issues
• Socio-technical implications
• Business models for emerging Internet of Things
• RFID technology and RFID middleware
• Standardization issues for the Internet of Things
• Inter-vehicle communications and seamless connectivity
• On-board sensor systems
• Object Naming
• Service discovery protocols
• Machine-to-Machine Technologies
• Web services and Middleware platforms
• Context-Awareness
• Location & Tracking through Navigation Sensors
• Multimedia support in the Internet of Things
• Electromagnetic aspects related to Internet of Things
• RFID and Sensors antennas for advanced applications
Submission of original contributions is solicited on the above topics as well as others relevant to the “Internet of Things” concept. To submit your
paper please visit the website: tyrrhenian2009.cnit.it.
