[Tccc] CfP: ACM CCS Workshop on Assurable & Usable Security Configuration (SafeConfig)

===================================================================
Please excuse multiple copies of this message.
===================================================================
Call for Papers:
ACM CCS Workshop on Assurable & Usable Security Configuration
(SafeConfig)
http://www.arc.cs.depaul.edu/~ehab/ccs/safeconfig09/

co-located with the
16th ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS) 2009
===================================================================
Important Dates:

Abstract Registration 6/26
Submission 6/29
Notification 8/10
Camera Ready 8/18

===================================================================
Sponsors: ACM SIGSAC, NSF

A typical enterprise network might have hundreds of security devices
such as firewalls, IPSec gateways, IDS/IPS, authentication servers,
authorization/RBAC servers and crypto systems. These must be logically
integrated into a security architecture satisfying security goals at
and across multiple networks. Logical integration is accomplished by
consistently setting thousands of configuration variables and rules on
the devices. The configuration must be constantly adapted to optimize
protection and block prospective attacks. The configuration must be
tuned to balance security with usability. These challenges are
compounded by the deployment of mobile devices and ad hoc networks.
The resulting security configuration complexity places a heavy burden
on both regular users and experienced administrators and dramatically
reduces overall network assurability and usability. For example, a
December 2008 report from Center for Strategic and International
Studies "Securing Cyberspace for the 44th Presidency" states that
"inappropriate or incorrect security configurations … were responsible
for 80% of Air Force vulnerabilities" and a May 2008 report from
Juniper Networks "What is Behind Network Downtime?" states that "human
factors … [are] responsible for 50 to 80 percent of network device
outages".

The fist event of this workshop was invitation-only and sponsored by
NSF to promote research in this area. This workshop has an open call
for paper and aims to bring together academic as well as industry
researchers to exchange experiences, discuss challenges and propose
solutions for offering assurable and usable security. This workshop is
an open call for submission workshop will consist of presentations and
panel discussions on the following topics:

===================================================================
Topics

* Integrating network and host configuration
* Automated forensics and mitigation
* Metrics for measuring assurability and usability: Usable security
often involves trade offs between security or privacy and
usability/utility
* Abstract models and languages for configuration specification
* Configuration refinement and enforcement
* Configuration of MANETS and coalition networks
* Formal semantics of security policies
* Configuration testing, debugging and evaluation
* Reasoning about uncertainly in configuration management
* Representation of belief, trust, and risk in security policies
* Configuration/misconfiguration visualization
* Configuration reasoning and conflict analysis
* Risk adaptive configuration systems
* Context-aware security configuration for pervasive and mobile
computing
* Configuration accountability
* Automated signature and patch management
* Automated alarm management
* Protecting the privacy and integrity of security configuration
* Optimizing security, flexibility and performance
* Measurable metric of flexibility and usability
* Design for flexibility and manageability – clean slate approach
* Configuration management vs. least-privilege

===================================================================
Papers must present original work and must be written in English. We
require that the authors use the ACM format for papers, using one of
the ACM SIG Proceeding Templates (http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html
). We solicit two types of papers, regular papers and position papers.
The length of the regular papers in the proceedings format should not
exceed 8 US letter pages, excluding well-marked appendices. Committee
members are not required to read the appendices, so papers must be
intelligible without them. Position papers may not exceed 4 pages.
Papers are to be submitted electronically as a single PDF file.
Further submission details will be available on-line. The accepted
papers will be published in the workshop proceedings and the ACM
Digital Library

[Tccc] update to TCCC in-cooperation procedures - DISCUSSION OPEN

Hi, all,

As presented at the TCCC meeting at Infocom in April, the TCCC officers
would like to suggest we clarify the current procedures for obtaining
in-cooperation status.

The current procedures are informal; there are no specific guidelines in
TCCC. There are basic principles in the IEEE Comsoc procedures (as noted
below) which we would like to reinforce and augment.

Please post comments to the list on this proposal. The period of
discussion will last three weeks (ending July 1), at which time we will
summarize consensus, if any, and determine how to proceed.

Joe (TCCC chair, on behalf of the TCCC officers)

--------------------------------
Rules for TCCC technical cosponsorship:

- like the Comsoc, TCCC technical cosponsorship is granted to events on
a per-instance basis; repeated events (e.g., of a series) must reapply
for each new instance

- like the Comsoc, TCCC does not permit meetings to identify themselves
as "pending" TCCC technical cosponsorship, nor should they use TCCC or
IEEE logos until sponsorship has been granted

- like the Comsoc, TCCC expects requests for cosponsorship to be made in
sufficient advance of the meeting.

- TCCC technical cosponsorship is intended for meetings whose primary
focus is computer communications (including meetings bridging computer
communications with disparate fields)

- TCCC reiterates the purpose of technical cosponsorship, which, as
noted on the Comsoc sponsorship application, include:

"The endorsement helps to ensure that the technical program falls within
the committee's scope, that there is a quality, independent peer review
process for paper selection, and that three members of the ComSoc TC
will be active members of the event's technical program committee."

As a result, TCCC determines responses to requests for technical
cosponsorship based on the following criteria:

a) the meeting is in-scope for TCCC

b) that the meeting has a peer review process in which
every submission* receives at least three substantive
and independent reviews

*excepting only those declined due to process (format, late,
etc.) or scope (widely out of scope, or widely out of context
for a technical meeting)

b) the meeting has an appropriate TPC

c) the meeting is demonstrably non-profit

d) the meeting has an appropriate acceptance rate and acceptance
rate history

e) the request is made in advance of all aspects of the meeting
TCCC shall specifically require the application be received at
least two months prior to the deadline for the initial due date
for responses to the call for participation for any part of the
meeting (papers, posters, panel chairs, track/symposium topics,
tutorials, etc.)

f) TCCC shall be permitted to select or appoint one TPC member
to monitor and report back on the above points

- The requirements for submitting a request for TCCC technical
cosponsorship consists of sending a copy of the following information to
any TCCC officer:

- date and location information
- info on the two most recent meetings
number of submissions
accept rate (percent accepted)
amount of time on reviewed submissions vs other
i.e., invited papers, speakers, panels
number of reviews per paper
- names, affiliations, and locale of the following:
general chair
program chair
TPC members
- description of the focus of the meeting
(1 paragraph or a draft call for papers)
- description of the components of the meeting
i.e., fraction of the meeting time on each of:
reviewed submissions
invited submissions
panels
invited speakers
co-located workshops, demos, etc.
- description of the review process
number of reviewers, paper length, approx.
intended acceptance rate
- description of the budget overheads of the meeting
i.e., non-profit status, extent of support
to parent/sponsoring entity
- brief description of why TCCC sponsorship is requested

If technical cosponsorship is granted to an event, we offer:

- The meeting may indicate TCCC Technical Co-Sponsorship on the primary
meeting web pages, the proceedings, and other promotional material
(e-mails, paper announcements, etc.)

- The meeting site / publications may include the TCCC logo

- TCCC will cross-list info on the meeting on our web pages, and note
our endorsement at our meetings

During the period of TCCC technical cosponsorship of an event, we expect
the following:

- The meeting shall notify the TCCC on any significant changes to info
provided in the sponsorship application (at which point sponsorship will
be reviewed)

- The meeting shall allow for 1 TCCC member on the TPC, to be determined
after sponsorship is determined. TPC members already in TCCC may, at the
discretion of TCCC, be selected for this purpose. The appointed member
will report back to the TCCC on the paper review process and file a
brief (1 paragraph) report to the email list.

Scope

The first IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Computing and Networking

Technologies 2009 (WMCNT09) will take place in conjunction with the IEEE

International Conference on Ultra Modern Telecommunications (ICUMT 2009) to
be held

in St. Petersburg, Russia, in October 2009. The workshop will be a day long
event.

This is an excellent opportunity to participate in two events covering a
wide range

of research in mobile computing and ultra modern wireless communications.

Overview

The new social, economic and technological trends having evolved worldwide
such as

the increasing demand for productivity and effectiveness with the pressure
to

respond immediately to customer requirements have created increased need for
access

to information anywhere in the world at anytime. Considering the present

telecommunication environment, which is an amalgamation of a large number of

networks and administrative domains employing various access technologies,
combined

with the increased user mobility makes it difficult to promise the same
grade of

service quality at all parts of the network. The convergence of information

communications technology and computing is creating new demands and
opportunities

for ubiquitous computing via wireless and mobile equipment without
technological

restrictions.

The demanding networking environment of wireless communications imposes
several

challenges in terms of network design, channel estimation, propagation and
radio

resource management offering a variety of high quality multimedia
applications.

Overcoming these issues becomes even more demanding due to non-uniform
spectrum

allocation, various radio resource management policies, economic concerns,
the

scarcity of radio resources, the inherent transmission impairments of
wireless

links, and user mobility.

The first IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Computing and Networking

Technologies 2009 (WMCNT09) serves as an open forum intending to promote
discussion

and bring together researchers, developers and engineers in both academia
and

industry to exchange ideas and to submit novel unpublished works about
architecture,

design, implementation, analysis, measurement, performance and simulation in
mobile

and ubiquitous computing environments. The main purpose is to encourage
research for

ultra modern wireless communication.

Authors are solicited to submit complete unpublished papers in the
following, but

not limited to, topic areas:

QoS in wireless/mobile systems

End-to-End QoS

Mobility management in wireless networks

of

computer networking and data communications. All papers will be reviewed and

accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, included in
IEEE

Xplore (approved). Papers must be submitted electronically in the EDAS. The
maximum

size of papers should be 5000 words including tables and figures. The cover
page

Eugene Golovins,
CSPRENI'09 Chair

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
International Workshop on Connectivity and Service Provisioning in the Regions with Emerging Network Infrastructure (CSPRENI)

October 12 - 14, 2009, St. Petersburg, Russia

http://crg.ee.uct.ac.za/cspreni/

Technically sponsored by IEEE Communications Society
Co-located with the International Conference on Ultra Modern Telecommunications (ICUMT)
http://www.icumt.org/
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OVERVIEW:

As the deployment of Internet and mobile data services in developed economies reaches saturation point, emerging economies are offering tremendous growth opportunities for global operators and hardware manufacturers. Most of the emerging regions are characterized by the markedly scarcer levels of data and voice communication network infrastructure in comparison with the developed regions. At the same time the growth rates of telecommunication service users (e.g., mobile telephony) are often enormously high. In the future, introduction of new value-added multimedia services over a ubiquitous IP-based network architecture is envisaged to sharply boost the demand for low-cost connectivity with assured quality of service (QoS) and quality of end-user experience (QoE). The deployment of these services faces a number of technological, marketing and regulatory challenges inherent to the developing regions.

The aim of the CSPRENI workshop is to bring together a group of experts from Academia and Industry, who are involved in the research and implementation of telecommunication system solutions for developing regions and would be interested in sharing ideas, results and experiences with other participants, encouraging future collaboration.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOPICS OF INTEREST:

Original contributions addressing networking architectures and service provisioning in the developing regions are solicited. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- deployment and operation of inexpensive broadband wireless access systems
- fixed and wireless mesh networks
- interworking heterogeneous wireless/wireline networks
- admission control and resource management in heterogeneous networks
- delay-tolerant and intermittent networking protocols
- QoS-aware routing
- capacity, throughput and outage optimization
- aggregation and sharing of Internet traffic
- content-based networking: caching, distribution, load balancing, resiliency
- self-protecting network architectures and protocol design
- IMS deployments over heterogeneous network infrastructures
- QoS interfaces to the transport network in IMS
- QoS provisioning for multimedia services
- development of killer applications and services for emerging regions
- innovative user interfaces
- AAA, pricing and billing
- innovative business models for data communications and services
- network operations and management
- test-bed and prototype implementation

[Tccc] CFP: Wireless Sensor Network for Infrastructural Monitoring (ITSC'09, Deadline: June 30)

(Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of the CFP)

Call for Papers for

*******************************************************************************
Special Session on Intelligent Structural Health and Safety Monitoring for
the

12th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems
********************************************************************************

October 4-7, 2009 in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A.

Deadline Extended: June 30, 2009 (No further extension will be given)

Using advanced sensor and wireless communication technology, the health and
safety of much of today's critical infrastructure (e.g., bridges, roads,
tunnels, and buildings) can be continuously, autonomously, and remotely
monitored to streamline maintenance efforts and provide early warning of
pending hazards (e.g., structural fatigue, icing conditions, floods, and
fire). These cost-effective systems allow for long-term continuous
monitoring, instead of occasional human inspection, thus providing immediate
detection of potential problems before they become major catastrophes. This
workshop will provide an overview of ongoing research in this emerging area,
including, but not limited to, the development of intelligent sensors,
instrumentation and devices for infrastructure monitoring, wireless sensor
networks, energy harvesting systems, structure reliability analysis, and
modeling, simulation, and implementation of infrastructure monitoring
systems.
