[Tccc] Announcing the SIGMETRICS 2010 shadow TPC

Dear colleague,

We would like to attract your attention to an initiative that may be
relevant to your group: In parallel with the SIGMETRICS'10 conference
(http://www.sigmetrics.org/sigmetrics2010/), a shadow TPC is organized,
targeted at senior Phd students, post-docs and junior faculty members.
The idea is to form a program committee next to the official one that
will review papers being submitted to the SIGMETRICS conference.
The shadow-PC will have an in-person PC meeting where we will select a
program, and have meta-discussions on topics such as the dynamics of a
program committee meeting, how to write good paper reviews, and how to
write papers that have better chances of acceptance at major
conferences. The reviews will be sent to the authors, clearly marked
as "review from the shadow PC". The shadow PC will be lead by
Bianca Schroeder, Steve Uhlig and Augustin Chaintreau.

This event provides a unique learning opportunity for junior researchers
preparing them to take an active part in the community as full PC
members for major conferences. The event will allow them to better
understand
how papers are evaluated and discussed in a program committee, how
reviews
are used, and how to lead a PC discussion as part of the decision making
process. The event is also an excellent networking opportunity allowing
participants to make contact with other researchers in the area. Note
that this type of event will not be organized frequently (at most once
every two years, probably less often).

We are looking for shadow-PC members with a wide range of competencies
relevant to SIGMETRICS. If you feel that a member or a former member of
your research group would both qualify and benefit from this educational
experience, please encourage them to apply (or send us their name).
In addition, if you are planning to submit a paper to SIGMETRICS,
please consider making it available to the Shadow PC.

Important dates:

- SIGMETRICS submission deadline November 9, 2009
- Deadline to apply for shadow PC November 10, 2009
- Shadow PC membership notification November 13, 2009
- Bid for papers to review Week ending November 28, 2009
- Papers assignment December 2, 2009
- Reviews due January 15, 2010
- Discussion phase January 18-30, 2010
- Shadow PC meeting February 1-2, 2010 in Paris

==== How to apply as a shadow PC member:

Please send an email to one of the Shadow PC chairs, including

1) Your topic(s) of expertise among the SIGMETRICS'10 topics:

Performance-oriented design and evaluation studies of:
* Network architectures, protocols and algorithms Operational networks,
* Network applications and servers Wireless, Mobile, Ad-hoc and Sensor
* networks Operating systems, File systems, Distributed and Cloud
computing
* Computer architectures, Memory systems, Storage systems, Databases
* Internet servers, Multimedia systems, P2P, Web services Real-time
* systems, Fault-tolerant systems, Language systems Security systems,
* Network attacks and Anomaly detection

Performance methodologies, evaluation techniques and algorithms for:
* Analytic modeling, Model verification and validation System and
* Performance measurement, monitoring and forecasting Workload
* characterization, Benchmarking, Capacity planning Experimental design,
* Reliability analysis, Social networks Statistical analysis,
Simulation,
* Signal processing Stochastic modeling, Random graph models, Stochastic
* analysis Scheduling, Resource allocation, Power management, QoS,
Pricing
* Theory: Control, Probability, Optimization, Queueing, System dynamics

2) Your CV. It is not necessary to have a long list of prestigious
publications to participate. This is used to assess seniority, and
experiences in research related to SIGMETRICS.

3) Whether you will be able to attend the Shadow PC meeting in person
(organized in Paris on February 1st-2nd). In-person attendance of the
meeting is very highly encouraged, to make the most of the experience.
It is not strictly speaking mandatory, however, candidates who commit to
attend will be given priority. Not that candidates are expected to
have the
necessary resources to attend the Shadow PC meeting. You may ask the
shadow PC chairs for advice on getting funding from your institution.

Each candidate shadow TPC members must agree to review up to about a
dozen of twelve page papers in December and January, participate in
the email
discussion phase during the second half of January and finally plan to
attend the shadow TPC meeting in Paris held on February 1st-2nd.

Best regards,
