Special Issue on Managing Emerging Computing Environments

Recent developments in IT technologies and changes in how IT
infrastructures are being used are creating new challenges for systems
management. The emergence of cloud computing, the convergence of
telephony with data networks, and the ubiquity of smart hand-held
devices have led to planetary scale IT infrastructures that serve
diverse users and support a plethora of heterogeneous devices and
applications. Increasingly, computing is moving to the Web as the
platform for applications of all types, e.g., enterprise solutions,
social networking, with growing expectations for reliability,
availability and security of the applications and the
infrastructure. Further, the presence of large numbers of computing
elements such as sensors demands increasing autonomy, and hence a move
from centralized to distributed systems management models.

This special issue will bring together new and innovative approaches
to systems management research that are addressing the challenges and
needs of the management of large IT infrastructures as encountered in
cloud computing and networks of sensors. Topics of interest include
(but are not limited to):

* Managing scale: distributed versus centralized management;
monitoring and reporting strategies for large infrastructures;
self-management (autonomous systems for scalability);

* Sharing: dealing with heterogeneity in data, models and APIs;
security issues; usage accounting;

* Manageability: embedding management into systems;

* Management of consumer computing: policy considerations for
consumers; privacy and information sharing;

* Energy awareness: management for green computing; energy-aware
management.

Submission Format and Guidelines

Prospective authors must prepare their papers according to the "Guide
to Authors" available at
http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/505606/authorinstructions
and submit to http://ees.elsevier.com/comnet/. Authors must select
"SI-Managing Emerging Computing Envt" when they reach the "Article
Type" step in the submission process. First time users must register
themselves as Author. Manuscripts should be clearly organized, written
in good English and describe original research not published nor
currently under review by other journals or conferences. Papers must
be in single-column format, double-spaced, and use at least 11 pt
fonts, and should not exceed 25 pages including references. Requests
for further information may be addressed to the guest editors.

Acceptance notification: 15 February 2010.
Final Paper Revisions Due: 15 March 2010.
Publication: July 2010.
