Visual Information Processing in Wireless Sensor Networks:

Technology, Trends and Applications

A book edited by Li-minn Ang and Kah Phooi Seng

University of Nottingham, Malaysia

To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=784 <http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=784>

Introduction

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have many applications ranging from environmental monitoring, security management, and medical applications to smart homes. For video surveillance and smart home applications, the wireless sensors used are image sensors. A WSN utilizing image sensors is termed a Wireless Visual Sensor Network (WVSN). Image sensors are able to provide useful information for recognition, monitoring, and surveillance. The drawback is the very high amount of data that would be generated. For battery-powered image sensors, the energy efficient processing of the images collected and transmitted in the WVSN presents a challenging problem. Other issues are to do with the collaborative processing, security and fault tolerance of the WVSN. Privacy and security assurances of WVSN applications for use in private spaces, such as homes and communities, must also be addressed for acceptance and adoption by society.

Objective of the Book

The objective of this book is to provide a central source of reference on visual information processing in wireless sensor network environments and its technology, application, and society issues. It will contain open-solicited and invited chapters written by leading researchers, academics, and practitioners in the field. All articles will be reviewed by three independent reviewers. The book will cover the state-of-the-art as well as latest research discoveries and applications, thus making it a valuable reference for a large community of audiences.

Target Audience

This book will be an important reference to researchers and academics working in the interdisciplinary domains of wireless sensor network technology and multimedia technology and its related areas such as image processing, pervasive computing, embedded systems, computer networks, and so forth. It will also be a potential resource for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

*
Energy efficient models, techniques, and algorithms for WVSN
*
Visual processing, collaborative multi-camera processing, image fusion, and event/change detectors for WVSN
*
Image and video compression and communications for WVSN
*
Security, encryption, and authentication for WVSN
*
Intelligent, bio-inspired, distributed, and fault-tolerant techniques for WVSN
*
Hardware, real-time, and embedded architectures for WVSN (VLSI, reconfigurable, microcontroller, mote architectures, etc.)
*
WVSN simulators, testbeds, and research infrastructures
*
Integration of WVSN and other technologies (RFID, audio, sensors, Internet, etc.)
*
Applications of WVSN for assistive living, elderly fall detection, ambient intelligence, surveillance, smart homes and other smart environments, vehicular applications, environmental monitoring, etc.
*
Society aspects of WVSN (privacy, security, assurance, adoption issues, etc.)
*
Technical and society tradeoffs for visual processing in WVSN environments
*
Privacy preserving techniques for visual processing in WVSN environments

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before February 18, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by April 15, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by June 15, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.

Publisher

The book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the "Information Science Reference" (formerly Idea Group Reference), "Medical Information Science Reference," "Business Science Reference," and "Engineering Science Reference" imprints. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit www.igi-global.com <http://www.igi-global.com/> . This publication is anticipated to be released in 2011.
