Dynamic Spectrum Management in Wireless Networks

Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM) is expected to be a key technology in addressing the spectrum scarcity problem. To be effective DSM requires new techniques and technologies to provide the necessary intelligence and adaptation for mutually beneficial cooperation and coexistence of multiple wireless networks. Some of these techniques are known under the Cognitive Radio, where environment-aware unlicensed wireless devices can share the spectrum with other licensed networks without degrading their performance. Possessing this cognition capability, these devices have an open eye on their operation to avoid unmanageable interference on the nodes of other networks.
This coexistence can happen either when the primary network, as the owner of spectrum, makes decision to charter the spectrum to the so called secondary network based on a mutual agreement. Or, when the secondary network accesses the spectrum opportunistically. This goal, inconceivable in the past, is shown to be feasible due to recent advances in multiplicity of research disciplines involved, ranging from adaptive signal processing and spectral estimation techniques to power control and cooperative communications.

While some initial steps toward the implementation of Dynamic Spectrum Management concepts have already been taken, there are still challenges which need to be tackled before their full potential can be achieved. This special issue aims to consolidate the recent developments and advances in the area of Dynamic Spectrum Management wireless networks. The articles describing original research and development, implementation and validation related to both commercial and military as well as survey articles related to the area are solicited. The topics of interest include but are not limited to the following within the context of Dynamic Spectrum Management and cognitive radio:

* Spectrum management (sensing and sharing)
* Multiple access for multi-user systems
* Secure spectrum sensing and access control
* Spectrum management in the presence of jamming
* Spectrum underlay and overlay
* SDR-enabled systems
* Modeling of spectrum sharing
* Interference characterization
* Design tradeoffs in dynamic spectrum sharing
* Cooperative communication approaches
* Spectrum sharing among licensed networks
* MAC and Routing protocols
* Cross-layer design
* Multi-hop
* Information theoretic aspects of spectrum sharing
* Work related to standardization, (e.g., IEEE 802.22, etc.)

Submission Procedure

For manuscript submission, authors should follow the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine manuscript format described in the "Information for Authors" at http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/pci/info/sub_guidelines.html. Prospective authors should submit unpublished papers to ababaei@gmu.edu according to the following timetable.
