[Tccc] Postdoc Position in Coastal Environmental Sensor Networks

Postdoc Position in Coastal Environmental Sensor Networks

The Center for Environmental Sensor Networks (CESN; www.cesn.org) at
UMassBoston invites applicants for a post-doctoral research position in
Coastal Environmental Sensor Networks. The position will be affiliated
with the Environmental, Earth and Ocean Sciences (EEOS) department
(www.eeos.umb.edu) and will begin in the Spring, 2010. The successful
candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team working to develop and
deploy novel sensor systems for monitoring coastal watersheds and
adjacent nearshore marine environments.

The UMassBoston Center for Coastal Environmental Sensing Networks (CESN)
brings together University researchers, Massachusetts business and
industry leaders, and state and federal decision-makers, to provide an
integrated framework for developing environmental sensor networks,
especially in coastal areas. CESN is unique in its development of
integrated land-water sensor networks, thus crossing the land-water
interface, in focusing on "smart" networks, networks that are not simply
automated, but can also "shift attention" to objects and events of
interest, and in applying networks to urban environments. A diverse set
of applications range from ecological to military to recreational. Our
current focus is very nearshore environments (water depths < 30 meters).

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the CESN
mission in any or all of the following areas:

* Design, develop, and deploy wireless sensor networks for applications
in coastal environments
* Design networked sensor systems to meet specific research goals
* Develop field-deployable packaging of network hardware
* Develop software tuned to the requirements of specific
environmental monitoring projects

* Participate in and/or lead collaborative initiatives involving coastal
sensor networks
* Design, integrate, and test new sensors, network protocols, and
cyberinfrastructure in the Boston Environmental Area Coastal Observation
Network (BEACON)-Boston Harbor testbed
* Partner with government, industry, or academic institutions and
individuals to broaden the impact of CESN's initiatives
* Discover innovative mechanisms to provide needed sensor network
information to decision-makers
* Develop innovative web-based data display systems for the network data

Preference will be given to applicants who have experience with system
design and who combine skill in the design and assembly of hardware with
knowledge of the software required to integrate the hardware into cost
effect solutions.

Requirements: Completion of PhD in a field related to the design,
construction and/or use of wireless sensor networks to monitor
environmental parameters in aquatic environments.

To apply, please send a cover letter that includes statements of
interests and goals, a CV, and three letters of reference to:

Robert Chen, EEOS, University of Massachusetts Boston, 100 Morrissey
Blvd., Boston, MA 02125-3393.

Application review will begin on March 1, 2010 and continue until the
position is filled. UMass Boston is an Affirmative Action, Equal
Opportunity Title IX employer.
