Recent Advance on Distributed Sensor Systems & Applications

Applications are always the original driving force for researches, particularly in the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) area, which is highly utility-oriented. WSNs have emerged as a new information paradigm for distributed real-time and embedded systems, where the energy consumption and the data process and storage capacity of the sensor nodes must be taken into account. Example applications include environment monitoring, emergency response, critical infrastructure protection, medical care, intelligent transportation, and smart manufacturing. However, finding killer applications for WSNs is still a hard task that is heavily pursued.

This special issue aims at presenting innovative and significant research on the design, implementation, usage, and evaluation of wireless sensor systems, applications, and novel techniques, especially in a distributed environment. We seek papers that take a broad systems perspective rather than focus narrowly on low-level components. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

l Sensor networks applications, architectures, protocols, Tools, systems, and algorithms

l Real testbed measurement and performance analysis

l Operating systems and middleware for sensor networks

l Distributed networked sensing, actuation and control

l Energy harvesting technologies on power and energy management

l Wide-area sensing services and support for social networking

l Localization and time synchronization and QoS provisioning protocols

l Security and privacy in sensor networks

l Multimedia transmission (high resolution video etc)

l Inter-connection between distributed sensor systems

l Systems for context sensing and context awareness

l User interfaces/ User friendliness and usability issues for backend monitoring

l Collaborative in-network processing and data sharing

l Sensor devices and sensor circuits for distributed systems
