[Tccc] PhD student position in wireless sensor networks - deadline April 20

Applications are invited from those interested in pursuing a PhD in wireless
sensor networks (WSNs) at the University of Trento, Italy, in the D3S
group. D3S is a cross-institution group of researchers from both the
university and the nearby FBK-IRST research center, whose projects are
characterized by theoretical backing and practical applicability.

To offer a single example, one recent project involves a WSN deployment for
monitoring Torre Aquila, a local medieval tower. The system has been in place
for more than a year collecting data for analysis by structural engineers.
For D3S, this deployment served as a test environment for evaluating our WSN
middleware system, TeenyLIME, and as inspiration for novel routing and MAC
protocols whose requirements are grounded in reality. A paper on this project
received the Best Paper Award in the SPOTS track at IPSN'09. Other recent
awards in our group include the Best Demo Award at SenSys'07, and the Best
Ph.D. Thesis Award at EWSN'09.

Other examples of projects currently ongoing include TRITon, a project on road
tunnel monitoring using WSNs, and ACUBE, a project where a pervasive computing
environment equipped with audio, video, and other types of sensors provide
support for elders and people with disabilities.

The group has also extensive experience in publish-subscribe systems in
dynamic, large-scale P2P networks. In addition to real implementations and
deployments, we support our work through extensive simulation studies and
explore their theoretical underpinnings.

New PhD students are invited to participate in ongoing projects to gain
experience and insight into real systems, and to identify novel, challenging
problems whose solutions break new ground.

The Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science is a leading
