THEME -- Distributed sensors and sensor networks deliver huge amounts
of real-world data - but how can we make effective use of these data?
How can we use it to control real-world processes in a timely manner,
and how can we control the sensing systems themselves? Future networked
embedded systems will have a sensing part, but they also act on the
real-world, they may be mobile, and they may consist of cooperating
heterogeneous devices with vastly different capabilities. Designing and
realizing such systems which will empower a new generation of real-world
applications with significant impact on industry and research is a true
challenge.
GOALS AND AUDIENCE -- The goal of the summer school is to survey
fundamental and applied aspects of distributed actuation, control,
and mobility in the context of networked embedded systems, as well
as to identify novel opportunities and research directions in these
areas through a series of lectures by international experts.
Participants can experience the relevant technologies during hands-on
courses and can present their own work during a participant's workshop.
The school will provide a good opportunity to get to know other people
working in the field, to meet distinguished scholars, and to establish
contacts that may lead to research collaborations in the future. We
expect about 60 participants - the intended audience are postgraduate
students, PhD students, and young researchers from universities and
industrial laboratories around the world.

LOCATION -- The school will take place in the relaxed and inspiring
atmosphere of Schloss Dagstuhl (Dagstuhl manor house), Germany,
close to the border of Luxembourg and France. Schloss Dagstuhl is
"the world's premier venue for informatics": it was built in 1760
and is used for computer science seminars and conferences since
1990. Besides providing accommodation and a comprehensive computer
science research library, it offers a unique setting for inspiring
discussions, informal exchange of ideas, and socializing. The rural
surroundings provide good opportunities for relaxed walks.
PARTICIPATION -- Prospective participants should apply online
before May 31, 2010 at the summer school website. The number of
participants is limited to a maximum of 60. If we receive more
applications, participants will be selected based on their work area
and background, geographic distribution, and date of application.
Acceptance notifications will be sent by June 15. The registration
fee (220 EUR in shared double room, 310 EUR in single room) covers
participation in the summer school, accommodation, all meals and
excursions. CONET provides 15 grants of 220 EUR each for selected
European students, that is, participation for recipients of a grant
is free of charge when sharing a double room.
ORGANIZATION -- The school is directed by Kay Roemer (University of
Lubeck and ETH Zurich) and Friedemann Mattern (ETH Zurich) and organized
by the European Network of Excellence CONET. For details see
