The Cognitive Radio paradigm emerged from the necessity for more efficient utilization of the
wireless spectrum as the static spectrum allocation policy results in very low spatial and
temporal utilization of the available resources. According to the Cognitive Radio networks'
technology, wireless terminals take into account information from the dynamic radio environment
and have the ability to adapt their operational parameters in a dynamic manner. This feature is
utilized with the aim to achieve efficient utilization and sharing of the available spectrum
among un-licensed users. Cognitive Radio networks face numerous research challenges as, due to
the wide and diversely used wireless spectrum, the different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements,
and the different capabilities of the mobile users' terminals, its support requires the
consideration of a large set of complex and dynamically adapting parameters. Thus, the efficiency
of the Cognitive Radio networks' support techniques has a critical role in the overall system performance.

This complex issue can be addressed with the use of advanced Cross-Layer Design techniques. The ability
to exchange information between the different network entities facilitates the operation of Cognitive
Radio systems and significantly improves their performance as it results in a) more efficient and
appropriate operation of each relative protocol and algorithm, b) more efficient and adapted to the
varying system conditions management of the available resources, c) the avoidance of conflicts and
situations of inefficient operation caused by the lack of communication between protocols of different
layers, and, finally, d) the improvement of the provided Quality of Service and satisfaction of the end users.
The main aim of this special session is to highlight state-of-the-art techniques on the most recent research
advances in Cross-Layer Design solutions for Cognitive Radio networks.

Prospective authors are invited to submit original and unpublished technical papers on, but not limited to
Cross-Layer solutions on the following research topics:
- Cognitive Radio technologies and Opportunistic Spectrum Access
- Resource management and QoS provision in Cognitive Radio networks
- Multiple access techniques for Cognitive Radio networks
- Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Radio Networks
- Spectrum Mobility for Cognitive Radio Networks
- Cooperative radio resource, spectrum, and power management
- Security in Cognitive Radio systems
- Routing in ad-hoc Cognitive Radio networks

Special session submissions should follow the author guidelines of the conference, and indicate the special
session topic during paper registration at the EDAS System.
