CALL FOR PAPERS
International Conference on High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC10)
Special Topic -- High Performance Computing Workforce Development Call for Papers and Panels
November 13-19, 2010, New Orleans, LA, USA
http://sc10.supercomputing.org/
Submission deadline: July 15, 2010

--------------------------------------------------------------

The growing use of high performance computing (HPC) in industry and research is driving an increasing demand for practitioners and researchers with expertise in HPC. This trend, coupled with declining enrollments in computing education, is creating a HPC workforce shortage affecting government, industry, and academia. To meet critical workforce needs, more skilled practitioners and researchers need to be trained.
SC10's Special Topic on Workforce Development will explore issues and solutions in HPC workforce development. The objective is to bring together the community of HPC practitioners, researchers, and educators to explore HPC workforce needs, novel and effective education and training approaches, and to identify trends and forces affecting the HPC workforce over the coming decade with a specific focus on:
Identifying and exploring specific skills and capabilities needed in the HPC workforce Descriptions of new and existing approaches to increase the skilled workforce Discussion of the trends and forces shaping HPC workforce needs New education and training approaches over the next 5 and 10 years.

SUBMISSIONS:

SC10 is soliciting paper submissions and proposals for papers of 5 to 10 pages on high performance computing and cyberinfrastructure workforce development. Proposals for panels related to topic areas are also invited. Panel proposals include a 150 word page abstract of the panel that includes a position statement. Proposals should also provide a description of the target audience and a list of proposed panelists.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

The problems
- Curriculum development for HPC and cyberinfrastructure
- Proficiencies and skills needed in the workforce to meet the high performance computing needs of industry, academia, and government laboratories
- Impacts of limited workforce on the adoption and use of HPC in industry, academia, and government
- Global needs for skilled practitioners in HPC and cyberinfrastructure
- Effects of growth of multi-core computing systems on workforce development needs
- Industry specific and cross-sector workforce development needs
- Broadening participation

The solutions
- Course and curriculum development in academia, government, and industry
- Approaches to providing training and education to increase the skilled workforce in HPC and cyberinfrastructure
- Online and face-to-face educational approaches
- Data and computation
– preparing practitioners to manage the data deluge
- Efforts to broaden participation within underrepresented communities

Building for the future
- Workforce needs for the next 5 to 10 years
- Strategic directions and goals for HPC workforce development, education, and curriculum over the next decade
- New and emerging approaches for the delivery of education and training to increase the workforce
- Emerging technology trends and forces (such as GPUs and multicore computing) we will need to consider in curriculum development, education, and training.

Submission Guidelines

Papers should not exceed 10 pages in length, following the IEEE Transactions format. Panel proposals should include a maximum 150 word abstract. Papers and panel proposals should be submitted to the SC10 submission website https://submissions.supercomputing.org. Each submission will be reviewed by the program committee, and final decisions will be based on obtained reviews and levels of recommendation.

Important Dates:
Paper and Panel submissions due: July 15, 2010
Notification of acceptance: August 15, 2010
Special Topic presentation dates: November 16 – 18, 2010
