Main Theme
IEEE Systems Journal is a journal publishing application-oriented research
papers that address complex systems of significance in a systematic way.
IEEE Systems Journal will publish a special issue dedicated to the topic of
"Multimedia Communications Systems." The goal of this special issue is to
bring together the state of the art research contribution that describes
original and unpublished work addressing multimedia communications systems.

Due to the latest developments in electronics industry, multimedia
communications is one of the key enabling technologies in the current and
future networks. With the emerging multimedia techniques which can be used
for various pervasive applications such as conference, health care,
environmental monitoring, security and surveillance, there are a number of
important challenges that arise when multimedia transmits in these new
systems.

Topics of primary interest include, but are not limited to:

* Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks
- Multimedia Streaming in WSNs
- Collaborative Caching of Multimedia in WSNs
- Mobile Multimedia Sensor Networks

* Advanced multimedia communications protocols
- SIP, SDP, MGCP, H.248, RTP, RTSP and related protocols for delivery of
multimedia services over IP networks;
- SIP, H.323 & MGCP: features, comparisons & SIP translators;
- SIP & PSTN inter-working;
- SIP/IP terminals, SIP servers, IP routers & gateways;
- QoS parameters, mechanisms and tradeoffs for best effort, queuing,
traffic shaping, class of service networks.

* Standards-based video compression and application enhancements
-Overview descriptions, analyses & comparisons of video coding for H.263,
H.263+, H.263++, H.261, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4 Simple and Advanced Simple
Profiles, H.264/AVC, M-JPEG, JPEG2000, scalable coding.

* Systems issues for wired and wireless communications
-Cross-layer design for multimedia communications;
-Multiplex structures and transport protocols including MPEG2 transport,
MPEG4 multiplex, RTP/UDP/IP;
- Sync & timing recovery;
- Error resilience and concealment;
- Resource allocation and system scheduling;
- Real-time video over IP and ATM;
- Multimedia security.

* Speech and audio coding for multimedia applications
- Speech and audio: similarities and differences;
- Overviews and analyses of speech coding for G.711, G.722, G.723.1, G.726,
G.728, G.729/A;
- Overviews and analyses of MPEG audio coding, mp3 and AMR and AACPlus.

Submission & Review Instructions:
All papers submitted to this Special Issue will undergo further reviews by
at least 3 independent reviewers. All manuscripts should be submitted
electronically to the IEEE Systems Journal by November 1, 2010
(http://systemsjournal.org/papersub.html). Authors should indicate that
their manuscript is being submitted for the Special Issue on Multimedia
Communications Systems. All submissions must be prepared according to IEEE
Systems Journal submission guidelines. A copy of the manuscript should be
emailed in PDF format to the special issue Guest editors.
