The 3½ year research project: "Optimization of Wireless Sensor Networks for the Smart Grid" will investigate novel and effective wireless sensor network (WSN) solutions for smart grid and smart metering applications. A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to control appliances at consumer's homes to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability and transparency. The focus of this project is to investigate architecture, protocol, and interoperability issues of smart energy communications in a home network scenario. In particular, the project aims to resolve these outstanding issues by using optimization techniques and inventing new protocols.
During the PhD, the student is expected to undergo a minimum of 3 months full time placement at TREL's Telecommunications Research Laboratory based in Bristol, where some of the newly developed/refined algorithms will be applied to practical problems.
