Special Issue on Advances in Optical Networks Control and Management
Manuscripts due: September 1, 2010
==================================================================
Optical networks play essential roles in current information infrastructure and the future Internet. In order to support efficient delivery of highly available, highly reliable services, intelligent solutions, e.g., GMPLS/ASON/OTN/PCE, have been proposed to tackle the control and management issues in multi-layer, multi-domain, and multi-service optical networks for a couple of years. More recently, with the rapid progress of optical communications (from 10Gb/s to 40Gb/s, even 100Gb/s per wavelength) and increasing demand of high-bandwidth dynamic services from IP layer, Carriers are going to deploy more and more optical switching/transmission equipments in their backbone networks. Consequently, automated control and management issues in optical networks are becoming Carriers' top concerns.

This special issue aims at providing an opportunity for researchers and engineers from both academia and industry to present their latest results/experiences on advances in optical networks control and management. This special issue invites high quality original papers on all aspects of control and management in optical networks. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
·         Optical networks (including SONET/SDH) modeling, planning, design, and simulation issues..
·         Control and management issues in OTN/ROADM, OBS/OPS, WDM-PON/10GPON/10GEPON networks.
·         Algorithm, protocol, mechanism of ASON/GMPLS/PCE for control and management in the future optical networks.
·         Cross-layer design issues in multi-layer optical networks, for example, the integrated IP/WDM system/network for QoS management.
·         Survivability issues in optical networks, particularly, fault detection, dissemination, fast restoration, and alarm management.
·         Service management and service provisioning in optical networks, e.g., dynamic wavelength service and sub-wavelength grooming services, OVPN services management.
·         Network Management system (NMS), Element management system (EMS), and Management information database (MIB) for ROADM/OTN-based equipments.
·         Standard activities for optical networks control and management (e.g., IEEE/IETF/OIF/ITU/FSAN).
