PhD: Cooperative and Cognitive Network Platforms (CCNPs)
Job Description
This project proposes Cooperative and CognitiveNetwork Platforms (CCNPs)
as a future-proof solution for creating the secure, dependable,
powerful, self-organizing and self-managing communication substrates
that are a prerequisite for applying effective ICT solutions to societal
problems. The cooperative nature of the CCNP systems creates the
conditions to do this in an optimal way from e.g., an energy or a
dependability point of view . The project aims to create novel
Cooperative and CognitiveNetwork Platforms (CCNP) for significantly
improving communication needed to support critical services across a
range of sectors, e.g., public safety and security, health and
well-being. The CCNP concept is directly derived from the Personal
Network (PN) and Fednet concepts, inherently cooperative environments,
developed and prototyped in Freeband PNP2008 and the European FP6 IST
projects MAGNET and MAGNET Beyond. It relies on the huge storage and
processing capabilities that will be offered by future consumer-level
computing systems, the widespread availability of a large variety of
radio interfaces, and the vast amount of sensor and context data that
will be available from sources internal and external to the CCNP. The
cognitive aspect at the core of this proposal goes far beyond cognitive
radio.
Requirements
We are looking for a candidate with an MSc degree in Electrical and
Computer Engineering or an equivalent degree, and with a strong
background in wireless networking. Knowledge in cognitive sciences and
artificial intelligence will be appreciated. The candidate is expected
to publish her/his research in scientific journals and conferences. The
candidate should be capable of performing independent research and
working in a team on research projects. The duties include:
* Development of a detailed research programme on CCNP,
* Realisation of the developed research programme,
* Preparation of project reports and scientific papers,
* Preparing and defending the PhD thesis,
* Supervision of MSc students.
The researcher should have an open personality and good English language
skills to closely cooperate with colleagues and students as well as
write project proposals and deliverables. Delft University of
Technology is a bilingual organisation; a good command of English
(written and spoken) is essential; a good command of Dutch as well is
preferred.
Conditions
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible
work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of
assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA').
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour
Agreement for Dutch Universities. For more information about this

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is a multifaceted institution
offering education and carrying out research in the technical sciences
at an internationally recognized level. Education, research and design
are strongly oriented towards applicability. TU Delft develops
technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety
and economic vitality. At TU Delft you will work in an environment where
technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft comprises eight
faculties, unique laboratories, research institutes and schools.
Department: Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science
The area of wireless and mobile communications is an aspect of the
telecommunications field. In the Wireless and Mobile Communications
group, we focus on ubiquitous wireless communication, in particular to
support personal networks and ambient intelligence. This requires a
cross-layer approach which covers all layers from the physical layer
(radio) to the layers that provide generic services to applications,
including the control and management planes. Mission: Our mission is to
create an internationally renowned centre of excellence in radio
technology and wireless and mobile networking, aimed at supporting the
vision of ambient intelligence and personal networking, and to educate a
substantial number of PhD students in this field. Vision: There is a
consensus that new ICT technologies should be centred on the user,
improving quality of life and adapting to the needs of the individual
without being intrusive. The physical environment a person inhabits -
homes, offices, cars, public places and transportation - will become
smarter, more responsive, and more accommodating to the needs of the
individual. For instance, future technologies will provide
location-dependent services and will introduce new levels of personal
comfort and safety.
