[Mycolleagues] [CFP] The First International Workshop on Wireless Vehicular Networking (VINT-08) -- the submission deadline is extended to Sept. 5, 2008

[Apologies if you received multiple copies of this call for papers]
==================================================================
The submission deadline of VINT-08 is further extended to Sept. 5, 2008
==================================================================

Call for Papers

The First International Workshop on Wireless Vehicular Networking
Technology (VINT-08), November 17-19, 2008, Maui, Hawaii, USA

http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/VINT08/

To be held in conjunction with The Fourth Annual International
Wireless Internet Conference (WICON 2008)

==================================================================

Aims and Scope
------------------------
The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances
in the development of wireless vehicular networking technologies.
Based on short- to medium-range communication systems (vehicle-to-vehicle
and vehicle-to-roadside), vehicular networks will enable vehicular
safety applications including collision and other safety warnings
as well as non-safety applications like real-time traffic congestion
and routing information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment,
and many others. The creation of high-performance, highly reliable,
highly scalable, and secure vehicular networks technologies, though,
presents an extraordinary challenge to the wireless research community:
a high degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable
channel conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular networks
in terms of mobility behavior and applications scenarios and requirements
makes vehicular networks research an exciting and demanding application-
and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking.

Topics of Interest
--------------------------
Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and
protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to
Vehicular Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting
and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish
journal-style results. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Vehicular mobile ad-hoc networks
- Routing protocols for V2V communications
- MAC layer technologies
- Physical layer and RF level technologies
- Antenna technologies
- Role of V2V communications in Intelligent Transportation Systems
- Safety and non-safety applications
- High-speed mobility management
- Radio resource management and QoS support
- Roadside-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communication
- Algorithms, protocols and systems for data dissemination
- Channel modeling
- Modulation and coding
- Power control and scalability issues
- Multi-channel organization and operation
- Security issues and countermeasures
- Privacy issues
- Network management
- Simulation frameworks & real-world testbeds

Submissions and Proceedings
---------------------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit an electronic version of original, unpublished
manuscripts via ISAS website (http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/VINT08/ISAS/). The
manuscript should be written in English and follow ACM two-column format with
single-spaced, ten-point font in the text. The maximum manuscript length is
five (5) pages including figures and references. All submitted papers will be
refereed by reviewers in terms of correctness, originality, technical strength,
significance and quality of presentation. Accepted papers will be made
available in the ACM Digital Library.

[Mycolleagues] First International Workshop on Autonomous Embedded Systems and Networking (AESN-09) (Athens, Greece, March 23-25, 2009)

*Call for Papers*

First International Workshop on Autonomous Embedded Systems and Networking (AESN09)
Athens, Greece, March 23-25, 2009

This workshop will be held in conjunction with the 9th International
Symposium on Autonomous Decentralized Systems (ISADS 2009), held in
Athens, Greece, during March 23-25, 2009. (see for detail
http://www.ece.upatras.gr/isads2009/).

Scope:

Embedded systems such as process control systems, vehicle systems and
robots collect status data from environments or physical systems, and
control them. Such embedded systems are widely used in homes, offices,
buildings, vehicle and avionic systems and form ubiquitous systems. The
systems continue to work without human interaction. As a result,
embedded systems are networked and need to work autonomously.

Building autonomous system faces many challenges not only in server
systems, but also in the context of embedded systems. In particular,
embedded systems have different properties including (but are not
limited to):
* Resource constraints such as the limitation of CPU power, memory
capacity and battery life;
* Real-time;
* High dependability and safety;
* Distributed system integration.

The novel hardware, software and network architectures are required to
support those properties. Meanwhile, in order to increase reliability
and dependability in the system, new development methodologies are
needed. For this purpose the control theory and the system design
methodologies should be integrated. In addition to the platform
technology such hardware and software, theoretical approaches are also
needed to build autonomous embedded systems and network systematically.

A lot of networks of embedded systems form as ad-hoc networks, sensor
networks, P2P networks. Since ad-hoc networks, sensor networks, and P2P
networks typically consist of equal nodes without any central control,
these networks are important applications of autonomous decentralized
systems. In the network context of autonomous embedded system, there are
many challenges too. In mobile ad-hoc networks, there are many issues
not only on the traditional wireless communication issues including
bandwidth management, routing, power control, etc., but also on new
research issues as an autonomous system, including network configuration
and topology management, ad-hoc addressing, system integration etc.

The objective of this workshop is to stimulate researchers and
practitioners in embedded systems, autonomic computing, hardware
software codesign, cyber-physical systems and all other relevant areas
to present their new research ideas and results for advancing the
technologies in the field of autonomous embedded systems and networking.

Suggested topics include but are not limited to the followings:
* Hardware and Software architecture
* CPU and other hardware component
* OS and middleware
* Configuration, resource and QoS management
* Distributed and control algorithm and management;
* Development methodologies;
* Specification and Design;
* Performance evaluation;
* Sensor networks;
* Case studies and Applications

with respect to autonomous embedded systems and network systems.

First International Workshop on Autonomous Embedded Systems and Networking
(AESN09)

* Resource constraints such as the limitation of CPU power, memory
capacity and battery life;
* Real-time;
* High dependability and safety;
* Distributed system integration.

The novel hardware, software and network architectures are required to
support those properties. Meanwhile, in order to increase reliability
and dependability in the system, new development methodologies are
needed. For this purpose the control theory and the system design
methodologies should be integrated. In addition to the platform

[Mycolleagues] CFP: Special Issue on Ubiquitous Wireless Mesh Networks, International Journal of Communication Systems (IJCS), Wiley

    ------------------------------------------------------------
Apologies if you received multiple copies of this posting.
    ------------------------------------------------------------

    CALL FOR PAPERS

Special issue on: Ubiquitous Wireless Mesh Networks
International Journal of Communication Systems (IJCS), Wiley, indexed by
    SCIE

    http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/117946196/grouphome?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0

Wireless mesh networks are becoming promising communication
technologies for broadband wireless access by providing wireless
backbone to mobile devices over multi-hop wireless communication
systems. This emerging technology has a great potential for ubiquitous
wireless network access anywhere and anytime. A number of wireless
networking and communication technologies that support ubiquitous
wireless services and applications are currently in wide spread use.
Wi-Fi and WiMax based wireless mesh networks are examples of such
technologies currently under deployment, fostering broadband wireless
network access and supporting different communication ranges. While
these technologies provide flexible communication compared to wired
networks and single hop communication models, they are still
restricted to the existing wireless backbone coverage. The convergence
of ubiquitous computing and networking with wireless and mobile
networking technologies opens a path to a prom! ising opportunity for
ubiquitous wireless mesh networks and services. Indeed, this provides
a great potential for enabling ubiquitous wireless network access in
the next generation mobile networks. However, due to the heterogeneous
nature of networks, devices, and services, ubiquitous multi-hop
wireless access technology introduces new research challenges in all
areas of network protocol stack, including security, interoperability
and performance challenges. The aim of this special issue is to
publish state-of-the-art research results in the area of ubiquitous
wireless mesh networks, with focus on innovative architectures,
networking protocols, communication models, services and applications.
Manuscripts relating to these issues will be invited from researchers
working in these areas worldwide. Topics of primary interest include,
but are not limited, to the following:

    Ubiquitous and autonomic middleware
Experience with the deployment of wireless
    mesh networks for ubiquitous access
    Unique challenges and future trends
Ubiquitous wireless Internet access and services
    Self-organization and self-management
Wireless mesh network support for ubiquitous computing
    Localization, synchronization, and mobility
    Routing, multicasting and broadcasting protocols
    Cross-layer design and optimization
Experimental testbeds, prototypes, and practical systems
    Quality of service provisioning
Methods and tools for visualization and monitoring
    Performance modeling and simulations
Mobility support in wireless mesh networks
    Architectures, protocols, and algorithms
    Security, privacy, and trustworthiness issues.
Scheduling, load balancing and channel models
Technologies and standards for enabling ubiquitous wireless mesh
    networks

Andy Hertzfeld, one of the original designers of the Macintosh, is also the
author of the book Revolution in the Valley, which tells the tale of the birth
of the Mac. As the Mac approaches its 25th anniversary in January, Andy spent
some time talking about how the Mac has changed over time, how a group of highly
talented individuals was able to come together as a team to create it, why Xerox
let it get away, and how life might have been different if Steve Jobs hadn't
left the company for more than 10 years.

Forbes Puts the Spotlight on Dale Dougherty and Tim O'Reilly
"If the do-it-yourself trend is a revolution, then Dale Dougherty and
Tim O'Reilly are its Tom Paines," writes reporter Elizabeth Corcoran in a recent
Forbes.com story, Making Future Headlines. Thomas Paine, if you recall, was
America's cerebral, revolutionary activist and the author of a mightily
influential 1776 pamphlet, "Common Sense," supporting the American colonies
independence from Great Britain. Like Paine, Tim, founder and CEO of O'Reilly
Media, and Dale, editor and publisher of Make, are "awfully good at spotting
trends," writes Corcoran. So good, in fact, that Forbes also included the pair
in their photo feature on techno-wizards--"In Pictures: Eight People Inventing
    The Future."

[Mycolleagues] Expert Systems: The Journal...: ESAS Special Issue

    CALL FOR PAPERS
    ===============
Expert Systems: The Journal of Knowledge Engineering by Blackwell Publishing
Special Issue on Engineering Semantic Agent Systems

The IEEE International Workshop Series on Engineering Semantic Agent Systems
(ESAS) has been held since 2006 in conjunction with Annual IEEE
International Computer Software and Applications Conferences (COMPSAC).
Beginning 2006, COMPSAC is designated as the IEEE Computer Society Signature
Conference on Software Technology and Applications. ESAS Workshop Series has
    two complementary objectives:
    i. To inquire into the theory and practice of engineering semantic
multi-agent systems (MAS), especially methods, means and best cases.
ii. To explore into unifying software engineering methodologies employed
in implementing semantic MAS applications across domains.
Semantic web technologies render dynamic, heterogeneous, distributed, shared
content equally accessible to human reader and software agents. Here the
vision is to achieve a synergy with MAS technologies that other workshops
have so far missed, whereby both semantics and agents will be in the center
stage. ESAS Workshop Series aims at garnering the synergy of both
technologies by taking up both the semantic web and the agent aspects of the
common research issue. ESAS Workshops have been very successful in
attracting high quality submissions and they have become a focus of
attention for researchers and practitioners of semantic software agents,
mobile agents, MAS and semantic web technologies.

    Topics of Interest:
    -------------------
Topics span a wide spectrum of both theory and practice in autonomous
semantic agents, context-aware intelligent agents, agents as semantic web
services, software agents, mobile agents, agent architectures, multi-agent
systems, agent communities, cooperation and goal seeking through sharing
policy and ontology, safety & security in systems, other QoS issues, and so
    on.

    Paper submission:
    -----------------
This special issue of Expert Systems is primarily intended for revised and
substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at ESAS 2007
and ESAS 2008. Additionally, this CFP is open to all potential authors and
other papers by ESAS authors. Submitted articles must not have been
previously published or currently submitted for journal publication
elsewhere. The authors should include a brief statement in their submission
to indicate the way in which the article differs from their workshop papers
and especially comment on the additional original content and contributions.

A prospective author is responsible for understanding and adhering to the
submission guidelines which can be accessed from:
    http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/submit.asp?ref=0266-4720. Please
thoroughly read these before submitting a manuscript. Each paper will go
    through a rigorous review process.

Interested authors should submit digital copies (PDF preferred) of their
papers, including all tables, diagrams, and illustrations, to all the Guest
    Editors by email.

    Important Dates:
    ----------------
    Submission Deadline: September 30, 2008
    Completion of First-Round Reviews: January 31, 2009

    Submission deadline: November 1st, 2008

    *********************************************************************

Today's Internet architecture is stifling innovation, restricting it mostly to the application layer. From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored.
The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet. It will uniquely bring together approaches driven from mobile and wireless demands, network virtualization, network self-management, content and sensor networking and discuss these from both a technical as well as socio-economic perspective.

    Topics of Interest:
We solicit contributions that report early results addressing research challenges in topics related to the network of the future. Particularly, we want to identify and address issues with a high potential for significant impacts on the way the network is functioning and being used. The workshop welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners but fresh ideas in the form of early results, position papers and systems papers are particularly welcome.

Areas of interest include but are not limited to:
    - Alternatives to established technologies such as routing
    - Re-design and re-evaluation of today's architectural principles
    - End-to-end virtualization of the network
    - Technology to introduce vital but missing functionality

    Description
    ----------------
For most of the last century, the provision of telephone and,
generally, telecommunication services, was connected to national
companies operating as monopolies. The monopolist was in charge of
deploying the networks with criteria which were often more political
than economic. The generalisation can be considered valid although at
certain times and in certain places, it has not been true. The United
States is the more prominent exception. Small local operators offering
services to only a single community still exist today in the USA.
In the mid-eighties the first shy movements for reforming the sector
began. Amplified and generalised, they led to an extraordinary
transformation process that included, in most cases, the privatisation
of the monopolistic company. In hardly a decade from the first
privatisations, with markets that were progressively liberalised and
companies operating in competition, the direct construction of
networks by public companies or organisations seemed to have been
    definitely left behind.
However, almost at the same time as the privatisation processes
reached its zenith of activity, new policies of an unquestionable
impact on the industry emerged. The rise of what has been called
knowledge economy, or new economy reinforces the role of
telecommunications as a strategic investment. Such is the unanimity
regarding the importance of telecommunications that the reasoning has
changed. It no longer includes the existence of an adequate
infrastructure as a factor for regional development. Instead, its
absence is considered a sign of underdevelopment. As a consequence,
governments pay particular attention to telecommunications. This
renewed interest includes direct intervention in networks deployment.
The programmes intended to facilitate the development of the
information society act as a framework for most of these initiatives.
Almost all countries, including most of the less developed ones, have
their own proposals for adapting their economies to the new
socioeconomic paradigm which is starting to take shape. And in these
plans, the "universal access" to advanced telecommunications services
holds a prominent position. Generally, it is assumed that private
companies will carry out most of the tasks required to reach this
objective. However, the allocation of public funds for the
construction of infrastructures in places where a private initiative
will arrive late or not at all is also frequent.
But, more important than the above, similar projects are being
launched autonomously, without the coverage of any general plans, and
even in places where telecommunication operators maintain broadband
connection offers under normal market conditions.
In short, another decade has gone by and the scenario of public
participation in the deployment of telecommunication networks seems to
have changed again. Privatisations have slowed down (in some
countries, the government still maintains a significant importance in
the ex monopolistic (now dominant) operator's shareholding but,
particularly, more and more points appear anywhere on the map
identifying public or semi public networks.
One of the most significant characteristics of this public "comeback"
in the deployment of telecommunication networks is the fact that the
decisions are being taken, in most cases, by public entities with a
lower status than that of the central government: regional authorities
and, quite specifically, local or town councils. However, this is not
a completely new phenomenon. Although during the monopoly era
decisions were usually centralised, examples of local networks can be
    found in some countries.
The commercial maturity of some wireless technologies, with the
resulting cost reduction, is actually multiplying the number of cases.
However, not only wireless technologies are being resourced: many
examples can be found where public administrations have acted on, or
contributed to the deployment of cable or fibre. There is no common
rule on how to sponsor the construction of these networks or manage
them once completed: the experiments are diverse and depend basically
on the specific circumstances of each case.
At the same time, completely new possible roles for the public /
private interplay in next generation communications are emerging. We
have now important policy developments such as the eInclusion,
eHealth, eGovernment, eParticipation agendas, which share the same
basic axiom of preventing exclusion that was original of the universal
service approach, but now have a more balanced view between
access/supply and adoption/demand. Therefore, the public / private
relationship could be put in a wider, more social and citizen-centric
perspective, now closer to horizontal policies. Understanding these
new relationships is a key element of the development of next
generation communications, since they are no longer isolated from
general socio-economic welfare. Obviously, along the same line,
sustainability objectives appear. Sustainability is a potentially
basic contribution of ICTs to the rationale of public / private
interplay in next generation communications and its position deserves
    to be highlighted.
The phenomena described are important enough, both in its practical
aspects (as regards the impact on the market and society) and
theoretical aspects (as regards the discussion of its appropriateness
and validity), to make a detailed analysis, which is the intended
    purpose of this conference.

[Mycolleagues] The First International Workshop on Wireless Vehicular Networking (VINT08) submission deadline extended to August 29, 2008

Our sincere apologies if you received multiple copies of this CFP.

    ==================================================================
Due to many requests, the submission deadline has been extended to
    August 29, 2008
    ==================================================================
    Call for Papers

The First International Workshop on Wireless Vehicular Networking
Technology (VINT-08), November 17-19, 2008, Maui, Hawaii, USA

    http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/VINT08/

To be held in conjunction with The Fourth Annual International
    Wireless Internet Conference (WICON 2008)

    ==================================================================

    Aims and Scope
    ------------------------
The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances
in the development of wireless vehicular networking technologies.
Based on short- to medium-range communication systems (vehicle-to-vehicle
and vehicle-to-roadside), vehicular networks will enable vehicular
safety applications including collision and other safety warnings
as well as non-safety applications like real-time traffic congestion
and routing information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment,
and many others. The creation of high-performance, highly reliable,
highly scalable, and secure vehicular networks technologies, though,
presents an extraordinary challenge to the wireless research community:
a high degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable
channel conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular networks
in terms of mobility behavior and applications scenarios and requirements
makes vehicular networks research an exciting and demanding application-
and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking.

    Topics of Interest
    --------------------------
Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and
protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to
Vehicular Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting
and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish
journal-style results. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

    - Vehicular mobile ad-hoc networks
    - Routing protocols for V2V communications
    - MAC layer technologies
    - Physical layer and RF level technologies
    - Antenna technologies
    - Role of V2V communications in Intelligent Transportation Systems
    - Safety and non-safety applications
    - High-speed mobility management
    - Radio resource management and QoS support
    - Roadside-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communication
    - Algorithms, protocols and systems for data dissemination
    - Channel modeling
    - Modulation and coding
    - Power control and scalability issues
    - Multi-channel organization and operation
    - Security issues and countermeasures
    - Privacy issues
    - Network management
    - Simulation frameworks & real-world testbeds

    Submissions and Proceedings
    ---------------------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit an electronic version of original, unpublished
manuscripts via ISAS website (http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/VINT08/ISAS/). The
manuscript should be written in English and follow ACM two-column format with
single-spaced, ten-point font in the text. The maximum manuscript length is
five (5) pages including figures and references. All submitted papers will be
refereed by reviewers in terms of correctness, originality, technical strength,

    Fort Peck Reservation

Challenge: Fort Peck generates power for the reservation with an environmentally conscious wind farm project. "We needed a way to control the wind generation towers," said Paul Weyrauch.

Solution: Weyrauch's company, Gaffaney's of Williston, Plentywood, and Glasgow, offered the tribe a wirelesss solution that included three rugged D-Link DWL-7700AP access points. "This was the only product we found that could withstand -40 degrees Farenheit," Weyrauch states.

[Mycolleagues] AASN'2008: Call for Paper, less than one week to deadline

[Sincere apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CFP.]

    CALL FOR PAPERS
First International Workshop on Autonomous and Automated Sensor Networks, AASN

    http://sigappfr.acm.org/cstst08/workshops/aasn/

To be held in conjunction with
The 5th IEEE International Conference on Soft Computing as Transdisciplinary Science and Technology
    (CSTST'2008), Cergy-Pontoise/Paris, FRANCE, October 26-30, 2008.

    Summary and Topics:
Thanks to technological advances, wired and wireless sensor networks are attracting an increasing
attention that promotes their large-scale deployments in many applications, such as environmental
monitoring, military surveillance, and scientific exploration. Continuous improvements are motivating
works in addressing specific sensor network issues spanning hardware, network protocols, architecture,
operating systems, and applications. Furthermore, emergent needs to fulfill a variety of heterogeneous
requirements are highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary networks that control their processing
and manage their resources by means of self-organizing techniques. These techniques particularly
require sharing the decision-making process over hundreds of low-power, short lifetimes sensors.
The achievement of this goal is still facing an urgent and challenging question on how to provide
these spatially distributed sensors with reasonable autonomy that help them in performing the right
action, at the right time for the sake of fulfilling current requirements while increasing the lifetime
of the entire sensor network and guaranteeing reliable and enduring pathway communications. Automating
the sensor network activities is also an urgent and challenging issue especially that commonly sensing
devices are operating unattended in remote and hostile areas where manual maintenance is nearly impossible.
Since predefined and late decisions do not help much in improving the efficiency of networked sensing devices,
automation and autonomy are very important mechanisms in addressing upcoming developments that target
multi-services, collaborating, or competing sensor networks.

To reach these goals, the first International Workshop on Automated and Autonomous Sensor Networks is
seeking novel ideas in the following topics that include, but not limited to:

    - Heterogeneous sensor networks
    - Multi-service sensor networks
    - Sensor network control
    - Automated sensing activities
    - Competing sensors or sensor networks
    - Collaborating sensors and sensor networks
    - Semantic-based management of sensor networks
    - Resource management in sensor networks
    - Context awareness in sensor networks
    - Self-organization and self-adaptation in sensor networks
    - New architectures and protocols for sensor networks
    - New sensor network applications
    - Sensor network maintenance
    - Intelligent sensors and sensor networks
    - Data management in sensor networks
    - Data and resource sharing in sensor networks

    Important Dates:
    Submission deadline: August 17th 2008
    Acceptance notification: September 07th 2008

Quality of Service Architectures for Wireless Networks:

    Performance Metrics and Management

    Editors-in-Chief:

    Adibi, SasanUniversity of Waterloo, Canada

Jain, Raj George Washington University, USA

    Introduction:

Quality of Service (QoS) intends to provide different priorities to different users or data flows and to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow in accordance with requests from the application program or the internet service provider policy. Quality of Service guarantees are important if the network capacity is limited, particularly in cellular data networks. This book intends to present a comprehensive collection of QoS mechanisms for various access technologies and to introduce existing and traditional approaches to traffic management for wireless technologies. The chapters of this book may address the following topics:

    ·        Detailed requirements to implement Quality of Service (QoS) and methods for implementing and managing QoS

    ·        Identification and description of different models used for ensuring QoS in a network and explanation of  key IP QoS mechanisms used to implement the models

    ·        Explanation of the static (legacy) QoS provisioning

    ·        Requirements for dynamic QoS implementations (Push, Pull, and Hybrid models).

    ·        Explanations of current wireless network QoS provisioning schemes (i.e., IEEE 802.11e, IEEE 802.16, LTE, HSDPA, etc)

    ·        Implementations for QoS queuing mechanisms to manage network congestion

    ·        Implementations for QoS congestion avoidance mechanisms to reduce the effects of congestion on the network

    ·        Implementations for QoS traffic policing and traffic shaping mechanisms to effectively limit the rate of network traffic

    ·        Link efficiency mechanism Implementations to improve link's bandwidth efficiency.

    Scope:

The book; Quality of Service Architectures for Wireless Networks: Performance Metrics and Management, plans to present the current, state of the art research and practices on quality of service (QoS) schemes for wireless networks The proposals may include, but are not limited to, the following areas of interest:
