[Mycolleagues] [CFP] The First International Workshop on Wireless Vehicular Networking (VINT-08) -- the submission deadline is extended to Sept. 5, 2008

[Apologies if you received multiple copies of this call for papers]
==================================================================
The submission deadline of VINT-08 is further extended to Sept. 5, 2008
==================================================================

Call for Papers

The First International Workshop on Wireless Vehicular Networking
Technology (VINT-08), November 17-19, 2008, Maui, Hawaii, USA

http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/VINT08/

To be held in conjunction with The Fourth Annual International
Wireless Internet Conference (WICON 2008)

==================================================================

Aims and Scope
------------------------
The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances
in the development of wireless vehicular networking technologies.
Based on short- to medium-range communication systems (vehicle-to-vehicle
and vehicle-to-roadside), vehicular networks will enable vehicular
safety applications including collision and other safety warnings
as well as non-safety applications like real-time traffic congestion
and routing information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment,
and many others. The creation of high-performance, highly reliable,
highly scalable, and secure vehicular networks technologies, though,
presents an extraordinary challenge to the wireless research community:
a high degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable
channel conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular networks
in terms of mobility behavior and applications scenarios and requirements
makes vehicular networks research an exciting and demanding application-
and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking.

Topics of Interest
--------------------------
Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and
protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to
Vehicular Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting
and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish
journal-style results. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Vehicular mobile ad-hoc networks
- Routing protocols for V2V communications
- MAC layer technologies
- Physical layer and RF level technologies
- Antenna technologies
- Role of V2V communications in Intelligent Transportation Systems
- Safety and non-safety applications
- High-speed mobility management
- Radio resource management and QoS support
- Roadside-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communication
- Algorithms, protocols and systems for data dissemination
- Channel modeling
- Modulation and coding
- Power control and scalability issues
- Multi-channel organization and operation
- Security issues and countermeasures
- Privacy issues
- Network management
- Simulation frameworks & real-world testbeds

Submissions and Proceedings
---------------------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit an electronic version of original, unpublished
manuscripts via ISAS website (http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/VINT08/ISAS/). The
manuscript should be written in English and follow ACM two-column format with
single-spaced, ten-point font in the text. The maximum manuscript length is
five (5) pages including figures and references. All submitted papers will be
refereed by reviewers in terms of correctness, originality, technical strength,
significance and quality of presentation. Accepted papers will be made
available in the ACM Digital Library.

[Mycolleagues] First International Workshop on Autonomous Embedded Systems and Networking (AESN-09) (Athens, Greece, March 23-25, 2009)

*Call for Papers*

First International Workshop on Autonomous Embedded Systems and Networking (AESN09)
Athens, Greece, March 23-25, 2009

This workshop will be held in conjunction with the 9th International
Symposium on Autonomous Decentralized Systems (ISADS 2009), held in
Athens, Greece, during March 23-25, 2009. (see for detail
http://www.ece.upatras.gr/isads2009/).

Scope:

Embedded systems such as process control systems, vehicle systems and
robots collect status data from environments or physical systems, and
control them. Such embedded systems are widely used in homes, offices,
buildings, vehicle and avionic systems and form ubiquitous systems. The
systems continue to work without human interaction. As a result,
embedded systems are networked and need to work autonomously.

Building autonomous system faces many challenges not only in server
systems, but also in the context of embedded systems. In particular,
embedded systems have different properties including (but are not
limited to):
* Resource constraints such as the limitation of CPU power, memory
capacity and battery life;
* Real-time;
* High dependability and safety;
* Distributed system integration.

The novel hardware, software and network architectures are required to
support those properties. Meanwhile, in order to increase reliability
and dependability in the system, new development methodologies are
needed. For this purpose the control theory and the system design
methodologies should be integrated. In addition to the platform
technology such hardware and software, theoretical approaches are also
needed to build autonomous embedded systems and network systematically.

A lot of networks of embedded systems form as ad-hoc networks, sensor
networks, P2P networks. Since ad-hoc networks, sensor networks, and P2P
networks typically consist of equal nodes without any central control,
these networks are important applications of autonomous decentralized
systems. In the network context of autonomous embedded system, there are
many challenges too. In mobile ad-hoc networks, there are many issues
not only on the traditional wireless communication issues including
bandwidth management, routing, power control, etc., but also on new
research issues as an autonomous system, including network configuration
and topology management, ad-hoc addressing, system integration etc.

The objective of this workshop is to stimulate researchers and
practitioners in embedded systems, autonomic computing, hardware
software codesign, cyber-physical systems and all other relevant areas
to present their new research ideas and results for advancing the
technologies in the field of autonomous embedded systems and networking.

Suggested topics include but are not limited to the followings:
* Hardware and Software architecture
* CPU and other hardware component
* OS and middleware
* Configuration, resource and QoS management
* Distributed and control algorithm and management;
* Development methodologies;
* Specification and Design;
* Performance evaluation;
* Sensor networks;
* Case studies and Applications

with respect to autonomous embedded systems and network systems.

First International Workshop on Autonomous Embedded Systems and Networking
(AESN09)

* Resource constraints such as the limitation of CPU power, memory
capacity and battery life;
* Real-time;
* High dependability and safety;
* Distributed system integration.

The novel hardware, software and network architectures are required to
support those properties. Meanwhile, in order to increase reliability
and dependability in the system, new development methodologies are
needed. For this purpose the control theory and the system design
methodologies should be integrated. In addition to the platform

    [Mycolleagues] CFP: Special Issue on Ubiquitous Wireless Mesh Networks, International Journal of Communication Systems (IJCS), Wiley

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    Apologies if you received multiple copies of this posting.
    ------------------------------------------------------------

    CALL FOR PAPERS

    Special issue on: Ubiquitous Wireless Mesh Networks
    International Journal of Communication Systems (IJCS), Wiley, indexed by
    SCIE

    http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/117946196/grouphome?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0

    Wireless mesh networks are becoming promising communication
    technologies for broadband wireless access by providing wireless
    backbone to mobile devices over multi-hop wireless communication
    systems. This emerging technology has a great potential for ubiquitous
    wireless network access anywhere and anytime. A number of wireless
    networking and communication technologies that support ubiquitous
    wireless services and applications are currently in wide spread use.
    Wi-Fi and WiMax based wireless mesh networks are examples of such
    technologies currently under deployment, fostering broadband wireless
    network access and supporting different communication ranges. While
    these technologies provide flexible communication compared to wired
    networks and single hop communication models, they are still
    restricted to the existing wireless backbone coverage. The convergence
    of ubiquitous computing and networking with wireless and mobile
    networking technologies opens a path to a prom! ising opportunity for
    ubiquitous wireless mesh networks and services. Indeed, this provides
    a great potential for enabling ubiquitous wireless network access in
    the next generation mobile networks. However, due to the heterogeneous
    nature of networks, devices, and services, ubiquitous multi-hop
    wireless access technology introduces new research challenges in all
    areas of network protocol stack, including security, interoperability
    and performance challenges. The aim of this special issue is to
    publish state-of-the-art research results in the area of ubiquitous
    wireless mesh networks, with focus on innovative architectures,
    networking protocols, communication models, services and applications.
    Manuscripts relating to these issues will be invited from researchers
    working in these areas worldwide. Topics of primary interest include,
    but are not limited, to the following:

    Ubiquitous and autonomic middleware
    Experience with the deployment of wireless
    mesh networks for ubiquitous access
    Unique challenges and future trends
    Ubiquitous wireless Internet access and services
    Self-organization and self-management
    Wireless mesh network support for ubiquitous computing
    Localization, synchronization, and mobility
    Routing, multicasting and broadcasting protocols
    Cross-layer design and optimization
    Experimental testbeds, prototypes, and practical systems
    Quality of service provisioning
    Methods and tools for visualization and monitoring
    Performance modeling and simulations
    Mobility support in wireless mesh networks
    Architectures, protocols, and algorithms
    Security, privacy, and trustworthiness issues.
    Scheduling, load balancing and channel models
    Technologies and standards for enabling ubiquitous wireless mesh
    networks

    The Mac at 25: Andy Hertzfeld Looks Back
    Andy Hertzfeld, one of the original designers of the Macintosh, is also the
    author of the book Revolution in the Valley, which tells the tale of the birth
    of the Mac. As the Mac approaches its 25th anniversary in January, Andy spent
    some time talking about how the Mac has changed over time, how a group of highly
    talented individuals was able to come together as a team to create it, why Xerox
    let it get away, and how life might have been different if Steve Jobs hadn't
    left the company for more than 10 years.

    physics, the Large Hadron Collector, and Rapping at CERN

    Forbes Puts the Spotlight on Dale Dougherty and Tim O'Reilly
    "If the do-it-yourself trend is a revolution, then Dale Dougherty and
    Tim O'Reilly are its Tom Paines," writes reporter Elizabeth Corcoran in a recent
    Forbes.com story, Making Future Headlines. Thomas Paine, if you recall, was
    America's cerebral, revolutionary activist and the author of a mightily
    influential 1776 pamphlet, "Common Sense," supporting the American colonies
    independence from Great Britain. Like Paine, Tim, founder and CEO of O'Reilly
    Media, and Dale, editor and publisher of Make, are "awfully good at spotting
    trends," writes Corcoran. So good, in fact, that Forbes also included the pair
    in their photo feature on techno-wizards--"In Pictures: Eight People Inventing
    The Future."
