[Tccc] Masters by Research at University College Cork, Ireland

The Mobile & Internet Systems Laboratory (MISL) conducts basic and
applied research in computer networking for mobile/wireless and
multimedia systems. Led by Prof. Sreenan, the laboratory is supported
externally by several Irish and international companies, Enterprise
Ireland, the EU and Science Foundation Ireland.

Applications are now invited for the following position on a new
applied research project that is expected to commence in
September/October 2009. This project will involve very close research
collaboration with an established telecommunications company, working
to optimise the delivery of data over back-haul communication links in
3G/4G mobile networks. Note that this position is advertised subject
to funding being awarded for the project.

Masters by Research Student

The holder of this position will conduct research on data delivery
optimization for back-haul links in 3G/4G mobile telecommunications
networks, including the use of techniques such as caching, prefetching
and compression. This work will include developing a software
prototype - knowledge of C/C++ development on Linux will be viewed as
beneficial. Applicants should hold a Bachelors degree in computer
science/engineering, and ideally have relevant prior course/project or
work experience in the area of mobile telecoms. Applicants must also
have excellent inter-personal skills and a demonstrated capability to
work well in a team. The successful applicant will receive gross
payment of approximately ?20K per annum for 18 months, from which
he/she is expected to pay fees - for 2008/09 the fee was ?4730 per
annum for an EU student.
