[Tccc] CFP: 2nd International Workshop on Underwater Networks (WUnderNet), May 2010

[Apologies for multiple postings]

2nd International Workshop on Underwater Networks
(WUnderNet 2010)
http://www1.i2r.a-star.edu.sg/~hptan/WUnderNet2010
In conjunction with IEEE ICC
Capetown, South Africa, May 2010.

More than 70% of the earth's surface is covered by water. Despite having strong influences and impact on climate regulation, nutrient production, oil retrieval and transportation, the oceans remain the least explored frontiers of this planet and many oceanic and maritime applications seem relatively slow in exploiting the state-of-the-art info-communications technologies. The natural and man-made disasters that have taken place over the last few years have aroused significant interest in monitoring oceanic environments for scientific, environmental, commercial, safety, homeland security and military needs. The shipbuilding and offshore engineering industries are also increasingly interested in technologies like sensor networks as an economically viable alternative to currently adopted and costly methods used in seismic monitoring, structural health monitoring, installation and mooring, etc.

The technology used in current remote telemetry and in-situ local sensing systems leaves much to be desired. Ideally, there should be highly precise, real-time, fine grained spatial sampling of the target environment, be it a physical structure like an oil rig, or the ocean bed in the vicinity of frequent seismic activities. Wireless terrestrial ad hoc and sensor networks have been studied extensively but the notion of a wireless underwater network is relatively new due to the lack of an efficient underwater communications technology. The existing viable underwater communications technology is acoustic communications, which is characterized by severely limited range-dependent bandwidth and attenuation, extensive time-varying multipath propagation, long propagation times, and high temporal errors. This is a drastic change from the radio channel used by terrestrial wireless sensor networks and presents new challenges for every aspect of the network protocol suite.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and industry experts in areas relevant to underwater networks. Different aspects of the protocol stack from the physical layer to the application layer, as well as cross-layer issues, will be represented. The objective is to serve as a forum for presenting state-of-the-art research, exchanging ideas and experiences, and facilitating interaction and collaboration.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

. Underwater network architecture design
. Novel / Cognitive communications techniques
. Cooperative communications
. Acoustic signal propagation and physical layer issues (modulation, waveform, MIMO etc)
. Delay-Tolerant Networking
. Distributed Signal Processing
. Network coding
. Medium access control
. Routing and data delivery
. Reliability and robustness
. Security Issues
. Power management
. New underwater energy sources
. Localization and synchronization
. Data fusion and aggregation
. Cross layer Optimization
. Performance modeling and simulations
. New applications for underwater networks

[Tccc] CFP: Special Issue on on: Telecommunications Software Engineering: Emerging Methods, Models and Tools, MCM Journal, Elsevier

Mathematical and Computer Modeling Journal (Elsevier)

Call for Papers
Special issue on: Telecommunications Software Engineering: Emerging
Methods, Models and Tools

Telecommunications software engineering involves the application of
engineering methods in the development of telecommunications software
through the usage of systematic and disciplined qualitative and
quantitative studies. Software engineering, as such, is amongst the
younger generation engineering disciplines, which is still far from
reaching the stage of maturity. Software processes are more complex than
traditional manufacturing processes and are very poorly understood.
Telecommunication systems are very complex and the application of not so
well development software engineering processes for the development of
these systems adds to the complexity. Lots of works are undertaken
worldwide on telecommunications software engineering. As new and
attractive telecommunications technologies emerge every year, new software
engineering methods, models and tools are required for supporting the
development and the maintenance of the increasingly complex systems. This
Special Issue will dedicate to cataloguing excellent works on all phases
of telecommunication systems software development including requirements,
design, development, testing, maintenance, supporting algorithms and
protocols. Telecommunication topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:
• Optical communication systems
• Cellular communication systems
• Broadband wireless access systems
• Wireless Internet
• Software defined radio
• Bluetooth technology
• Ultra-wide band radio
• Emerging Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks
• Wireless Mesh Networks
• IEEE 802.11/802.20/802.22
• Emerging issues in 3G and 4G wireless networks
• Multimedia over emerging wireless networks
• Underwater sensor networks
• Very low-powered sensors
• Cooperative wireless communications
• Multi-hop relay wireless communications
• Emerging wireless network security issues
• Wireless telemedicine and e-health

SPECIAL ISSUE REQUIREMENTS
FOR AUTHORS
Computers and Mathematics with Applications
Mathematical and Computer Modelling
In order to continue the publication of professional quality journals, the
items listed below are the minimum requirements for accepting manuscripts
for Special Issues submitted for publication in Computers and Mathematics
with Applications and Mathematical and Computer Modelling. We ask you to
be sure that your manuscript meets these requirements when it is submitted
to us for typesetting. We will be unable to typeset/format your manuscript
until these requirements are met. We suggest that you use the following as
a checklist before forwarding the issue to us.
Number of manuscripts allowed per Special Issue: Authors should not appear
as co-authors for more than 2 (two) manuscripts (excluding Preface and
Dedication).
Addresses: Please make sure your manuscript has current and complete
addresses for all authors and co-authors. Include email and FAX numbers,
if available, as these are very helpful in any correspondence with the
authors. Also, please keep us updated on any address changes.
Electronic Versions: TEX, AMS- TEX, LaTEX, or Word files for the text of
the manuscript are acceptable. The digital file must match the hard copies
exactly. If any discrepancies are detected you will be asked to supply
matching digital version and hard copy. This will cause a delay in the
publication of this special issue.
Abstracts: Check to make sure all manuscripts begin with an abstract.
Keywords: Five keywords should be provided for your manuscript.
Figures & Graphs: Authors must supply figures and graphs in an electronic
format in addition to hard copies which are original, publication quality,
xerographically reducible and reproducible, approximately twice the
publication size, with labelling that is clear and sufficiently open to
permit the reduction of size. Each figure or graph should be provided on a
separate page, and approximate location in the text should be indicated.
Figure captions or legends, should be provided for all illustrations on a
separate page. Photographs should be sent as glossy prints.
The preferred format for figures and graphs is encapsulated PostScript
(eps). From with the TEX file of each paper, we import the eps figures.
For the fastest publication time, the format should be eps. However, we
also request that authors submit the original file of each figure and
information regarding the software used to create it. We will try to work
with any electronic format that we receive. However, this may cause a
delay, and at our discretion, we may require authors to re-submit the
illustrations in eps format, compatible with Adobe Illustrator. Each
figure or graph should be a separate file.

References: References should be numbered sequentially in the order of
their appearance in the text, not alphabetically. References should be
cited in the text in square brackets. If the references in your manuscript
are not in this format, you will be asked to redo them, causing a
publication delay for the entire special issue.
Copies: Please send 2 SINGLE-SIDED COPIES of your manuscript.
Meeting these minimum standards will ensure better quality and faster
publication of the Special Issue. We appreciate your cooperation.

[Tccc] CFP: 5th International Workshop on Content Delivery Networks (CDN 2010) in conjunction with CCGrid 2010

(Apologies if you have received this more than once)

**************************************************************************
5th International Workshop on
Content Delivery Networks (CDN 2010)

10th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on
Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing (CCGrid 2010)
17-20 May 2010, Melbourne, Australia
URL: http://www.cloudbus.org/cdn/2010
***************************************************************************

*** Papers Due: 5th December 2009 ***

We are in the midst of an Internet computing revolution. One vision of 21st century computing is that users will access
Internet services and "resource-hungry" applications (e.g., gaming, streaming media etc.) over lightweight portable devices
rather than through some descendant of the traditional desktop PCs. In this context, distributing and processing
Internet-based data in an efficient and cost-effective manner is a challenging issue in Internet technology.
Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have emerged to address this challenge by offering infrastructure and mechanisms
to deliver content and services in a scalable manner. Nevertheless, modern applications do not just perform retrieval
or access operation on content, but also create, modify and manage content, and actively place them at appropriate locations.
To deal with such new requirements, more general Content Networks (CNs) are being introduced. Design and implementation of
robust and efficient CNs in large-scale computing environments demand for the use of emerging paradigms and software
technologies, such as Peer-to-Peer, Grid and the latest IT trend¯Cloud computing. The integration of these emerging
technologies in content delivery opens new perspectives in Internet technologies, raising new issues in the architecture,
design and implementation of existing CDNs.

[Tccc] Call for Book Chapter on Autonomics (Proposals Submission Deadline is approaching)

[Apologies for multiple postings]

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS

Proposals Submission Deadline: *September 30, 2009*
Full Chapters Due: January 30, 2010

FORMAL AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF AUTONOMIC COMPUTING AND NETWORKING:
SPECIFICATION, DEVELOPMENT AND VERIFICATION

A book edited by Phan Cong-Vinh
Centre for Applied Formal Methods
London South Bank University, United Kingdom.

To be published by IGI Global:
http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=699

INTRODUCTION

A new computing and networking paradigm is currently on the spot as one
of the
priority research areas and its research activities are booming
recently: autonomic
computing and networking (ACN), which are inspired by the human
autonomic nervous
system.

ACN are characterized by their self-* facets such as
self-organization, self-
configuration, self-healing, self-optimization, self-protection and so
on whose
context-awareness used to dynamically control computing and networking
functions.
The overarching goal of ACN is to realize computing and networking
systems, that can
manage themselves without direct human interventions. Meeting this grand
challenge of
ACN requires a rigorous approach to ACN and the notion of self-*. To this
end, taking
advantage of formal methods we will establish, in this book, formal and
practical
aspects of ACN through specifying, refining, programming and verifying
ACN and their
self-*. All of these are to achieve foundations and practice of ACN.

>From the above characteristics, novel approaches of specification,
refinement, programming
and verification are arising in formal methods for ACN. Therefore, new
methodologies,
programming models, tools and techniques are imperative to deal with the
impact of ACN and
their self-* mentioned above on emerging computing and networking systems.

OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK

The proposed book is preferred to be a reference material for readers
who already
have a basic understanding of ACN and are now ready to know how to
specify, develop and
verify ACN using rigorous approaches. Hence, theoretical contributions are
welcome
provided their relevance for how to specify, develop and verify ACN is
clear. Reports on
applications are welcome provided their formal basis is evident. For
keeping a
reasonable trade-off between theoretical and practical issues, a careful
selection of
the chapters will be done, on the one hand, to cover a broad spectrum of
formal and
practical aspects and, on the other hand, to achieve as much as possible
a
self-contained book.

Formal and practical aspects will be preferably presented in a
straightforward fashion by
discussing in detail the necessary components and briefly touching on the
more advanced
components. Therefore, specification, development and verification
demonstrating how to
use the formal methods for ACN will be described by sound judgments and
reasonable
justifications.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The book is written for researchers, scientists, professionals and students
in computer
science and computer engineering as well as developers and practitioners in
computing and
networking systems design.

RECOMMENDED TOPICS

Topics of interest range from specification to implementation for ANC
systems based on
rigorous approaches in which theoretical contributions should be formally
stated and
justified, and practical applications should be based on their firm formal
basis.

Recommended topics of the book include, but are not limited to,
the following.

• Rigorous interdisciplinary approaches to
– Software architectures for ACN
– Resource sharing in ACN
– Autonomic middleware
– Swarm intelligence in ACN
– Security and trust in ACN
– Self-* in ACN
– ACN test-beds
– Architectures and topologies for ACN
– ACN and autonomic communications
– Bio-inspired ACN
– ACN for cognitive networks
– ACN for P2P, Grid, ad hoc and sensor networks
– ACN for storage and caching systems
– ACN for multi-agent systems
– ACN for active and programmable networks

• Calculi for reasoning about behavior in ACN
• Methods and tools for ACN design and ACN component design
• Applications of formal methods in ACN development
• Semantic technologies for ACN
• Formal methods for domain-specific ACN
• Formalizing languages that enable ACN

CFP: Advances in Mobile Computing and Applications: Security, Privacy and

Workshop in conjunction with the 24th IEEE AINA conference
20-23 April 2010, Perth, Australia

********************************************************************

Aims and scope

Advances in mobile hardware architectures and tremendous growth of
high-speed wide-area cellular systems deliver anytime and anyplace
availability of network-based information services to the owners of mobile
computing devices. Ever-growing popularity of mobile devices, such as smart
phones and netbooks, drives the demand for the development of innovative
software and hardware architectures, applications, and network services
aimed at these devices. As a result, we are witnessing a paradigm shift in
the way people use computing technology in their everyday lives.

Behind this dramatic increase in the use of mobile communications and mobile
devices, there is an implicit assumption of information security, privacy
and trust (SPT). However, for this assumption to be correct, wireless
communication and backend infrastructure, mobile device architectures, and
mobile applications must be designed from the ground up with security and
privacy concerns in mind. Security, privacy and trust cannot be an

Description of the Workshop
The medium is the message! And the message was literacy, media democracy and
music charts. Mostly one single distinguishable media such as TV, the Web,
the radio, or books transmitted the message. No in the age of ubiquitous and
pervasive computing, where information flows through a plethora of
distributed interlinked media what is the message ambient media will tell
us? What means semantic in this context? Which experiences will it open to
us? What is content in the age of ambient media? Ambient media are embedded
throughout the natural environment of the consumer in his home, in his
car, in restaurants, and on his mobile device. Predominant sample services
are smart wallpapers in homes, location based services, RFID based
entertainment services for children, or intelligent homes. The distribution
of the medium throughout the natural environment implies a paradigm change
of how to think about content. Until recently, content was identified as
single entities to information a video stream, audio stream, TV broadcast.
However, in the age of ambient media, the notion of content extends from the
single entity thinking towards a plethora of sensor networks, smart devices,
personalized services, and media embedded in the natural environment of the
user. The consumer actively participates and co-designs contextual media
experience One example is e.g. location based information. Initiatives as
the smart Web considering location based tagging for web-pages underline
this development. This multidisciplinary workshop aims to address the
challenges:
? how to select, compose, and generate ambient content?
? how to present ambient content?
? how to re-use ambient content and learning experiences?
? what are the characteristics of ambient media, its content, and
technology?
? how can collaborative, participatory, or social media service better
supported and extended?
? and what are ambient media in terms of story-telling, interactive, and
art?

The workshop aims at a series, and at the creation of a think-tank of
creative thinkers coming from technology, art, human-computer interaction,
and social sciences, that are interested in glimpsing the future of semantic
ambient intelligent empowered media technology. We are aiming at
multidisciplinary, highly future oriented submissions that help to develop
the "ambient media form" for entertainment services, such as:
* case-studies (successful, and especially unsuccessful ones)
* oral presentation of fresh and innovative ideas
* artistic installations and running system prototypes
* user-experience studies and evaluations
* technological novelties, evaluations, and solutions

Topics

The following (and related) topics are within the scope of this workshop and
shall act as examples:
* Understanding of the semantics of ambient content and methods for
adding intelligence to daily objects
* Mobile and stationary sensor data collection and interpretation
algorithms and techniques
* Context awareness and collection and context aware
composition/selection of ambient content
* Creation and maintenance of meta-information including metadata and
data management
* Ambient and mobile social networks, user generated content, and
co-creation of content and products
* Characteristics of ambient media, its content, and technological
platforms
* Ambient content creation techniques, asset management, and programming
ambient media
* Algorithms and techniques for sensor data interpretation and semantic
interpretation
* Applications and services, including ambient games, art and leisure
content in specific contexts
* Ambient interactive storytelling, narrations, and interactive
advertising
* Personalization, user models, multimodal interaction, smart user
interfaces, and universal access
* Experience design, usability, audience research, ethnography, user
studies, and interface design
* Business models, marketing studies, media economics, and " x" -commerce

The workshop aims at answering the following questions:
* What is "content" and how can it be presented in the age of
"ubiquitous" and "pervasive" ?
* How to select, compose and generate ambient content?
* How to manage and re-use ambient content in specific application
scenarios (e.g. e-learning)?
* What is interactivity between the single consumers and consumer groups
in the ambient context?
* How can collaborative or audience participatory content be supported?
* Which methods for experience design, prototyping, and business models
exist?
* How can sensor data be interpreted and intelligently mined?
* How can existing media such as TV, home entertainment, cinema extended
by ambient media?

Important Dates
* position paper submission: 19th October, 2009
* notification of acceptance: 22nd October, 2009
* final papers due: 27th October, 2009
* workshop day : 21st November , 2009
* special issue articles due: December 14th , 2009

Target Audience

The target audience are researchers and practitioners in the field of
ubiquitous and pervasive computation and its related areas. These include
pervasive computation, emotional computation, content creation, ubiquitous
computation, human-computer-interaction and usability experts, mobile
industry, service creators, etc. Workshop participants shall have previous
experience in this or related fields to be able to contribute on a high
scientific level. The workshop participants will actively contribute to the
development of semantic ambient media, due to a different method of workshop
organization. Participants shall participate rather than passively
contribute. The participants shall discuss and actively elaborate the topic
and we plan to kick-off an international web-based informal forum for
ambient media, which shall increase the effect of this workshop
tremendously.

We strongly welcome multidisciplinary contributions coming from the media
technology, artistic, and human experience side. Case studies (successful
and especially unsuccessful), artistic installations, technologies, media
studies, and user-experience evaluations are highly welcome, which are
affecting the development of ambient media as new form of media. Especially
visionary contributions shaping the future of ambient media are strongly
welcome.
