[Tccc] Vacancy at the Pervasive Systems group, University of Twente, The Netherlands

In the context of a newly accepted Dutch project, the Pervasive Systems
group (http://ps.cs.utwente.nl/) of the Computer Science Department at
the University of Twente in the Netherlands, is looking for:

- 1 PhD Student in collaborative networking protocols for underwater
wireless sensor networks

The Pervasive Systems group at the University of Twente is one of the
leading research groups in Europe in the field of wireless sensor
networks. The Pervasive Systems (PS) group investigates a new
distributed systems paradigm for bringing the flexibility of information
technology to bear in every aspect of daily life. It foresees that
people will be surrounded by embedded and flexibly networked systems
that provide easily accessible yet unobtrusive support for an open-ended
range of activities, to enrich daily life and to increase productivity
at work. We place emphasis on both the theoretical and practical aspects
thus ensuring that our research has a direct impact on society.

Project description:
This project aims at designing energy-efficient and hybrid networking
protocols to improve the functional lifetime of the underwater wireless
sensor network by designing MAC, data link protocols and awake-asleep
schedules to facilitate robust, collision free, energy efficient and
resource-aware communication. Additional focus of the project is on
developing techniques to optimize the use of available and variable
resources of the network while keeping the quality of service high and
life of the network long.

What we are asking for:
You should have completed or are about to graduate with a Master's
degree in computer science or applied mathematics. You should like
working in a team and have intellectual curiosity and knowledge of
relevant topics. Your main responsibility will be to carry out research,
but you will also be given the opportunity to acquire some teaching
experience.

What we offer:
We offer you a contract for a period of 4 years. Our PhD students and
engineers the opportunity to broaden their knowledge by joining
international exchange programs, by participating in national and
international conferences and workshops, and by visiting other research
institutes and universities worldwide. The monthly salary of a PhD
student, in accordance with the Dutch universities collective labour
agreement, ranges from EUR 2000 gross per month in the first year up to
EUR 2558 gross per month in the fourth year.
