Similar approach exist with some other scientific societies, as a way of
so-called 'virtual presentation' or something like that. I am not quite
sure about the details, but a 'virtual' participant has a discounted
registration that covers everything, minus conference banquet, lunches,
and other things he/she is not going to get. Such approach helps to the
organizers to print the proceedings in larger volumes.
