This survey is part of the work we (Arun Viswanathan and Jelena Mirkovic
of USC/ISI) are doing on the DETER Project at University of Southern
California / Information Sciences Institute to improve user experience
with distributed network testbeds. Based on our experience and
discussions with selected DETER users we concluded that testbed users
would benefit from a framework that enables them to define correct
behavior of their experiment and monitor for failures. This would help
them detect misconfigurations, failures due to software or hardware
changes and failures due to testbed faults. A general idea for this work
was published by Jelena Mirkovic et.al. in Usenix Workshop on Cyber
Security Experimentation and Test (CSET'08) on 'Experiment Health
Monitoring'. Refer here

for details.
*Objective of Survey *
We are conducting this survey to expand our understanding of the
specific problems that testbed users face while building, testing,
debugging, deploying, running and analyzing experiments. This will help
us focus on those aspects of our proposed solution that directly address
common problems.
*Instructions *
Each survey will ideally take between 5-10 minutes of your time.
Participation in this survey is voluntary and anonymous. In a few months
we will have a prototype of our framework (which we will announce on the
list) and we will look for beta testers. If you are interested to become
a beta tester please email us.
We have 3 different surveys and you can choose to fill any combination
of these depending upon your usage.
a) Survey for usage of testbeds in Education:

b) Survey for usage of testbeds in Research:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/deter-survey-research
c) Survey for usage of testbeds in Software Development:

Please feel free to forward the survey to any of your students,
colleagues and other researchers who may have useful inputs to share.
